A Renewed Dream

You know every horse lover’s dream, owning a horse. But really, is owning a horse everything? Over the years, I have become a more experienced rider, and with that my views changed.

A few months after I started taking riding lessons, I began asking for a horse. I knew we couldn’t afford it, but it was still worth a try. After the first time my parents told me we just couldn’t do it, I gave up asking and just went on with riding.

Then, the farm I rode at closed and I started riding my dream mare, Sassy. Then her owner decided to sell her after she bucked off a little kid, and that ignited the flame again. I asked my parents if we could buy Sassy, but we still couldn’t support it financially and still have room for my sisters to do what they dreamed of doing.

When Sassy was sold, I started taking lessons with the trainer who worked for the lady who owned the old farm. She put me on her horse Poldark, known as Po, and I have been riding him for about a year now. I have come to love Po, and she has given me unlimited access to ride him because she needs him in shape. He is basically my horse when I am out there, and I love everything about it.

With riding Po and the other horses at my trainer’s farm, my want for a horse has greatly eased. I no longer dream of having my own horse, but long to be the best rider I can be, riding several different horses and improving my skills. I want to be the rider the younger kids look up to, and that trainers ask to ride a misbehaving horse when the younger kids are having trouble. I am content without a horse for now, for I am really on my way to where I want to be.

  1. You are definatly right. THis blog helped me realize that what I have right now is actually pretty great, and I shouldn’t push for a horse when I know my family can’t afford it. Thank you for writing this blog. My parents will be thankful for a break from the insistent begging. You have real writing talent. Keep It Up Stargazer! You are amazing!!

  3. good advise but i still want a horse i sorta own a horse called marbles coz she lives on my uncles farm in the country i lived in 2 years ago but now i live at thwe other side of the world!! i miss her so much but i will see her in 4 months

  4. Thanks so much for your support.

Kat-Don’t give up. If you do sell your horse, try to sell it to someone who will take care of him properly. Whatever you do, don’t give him to a person who will sell him to the slaughterhouse to make cash. Maybe you could ask for some lessons with a good trainer this Christmas. A good trainer could help you through some problems. Also, try bonding with your horse. Try spending time with him other than riding. It could help.

Cam-It’s fine to own a horse. I just find that I don’t desperately want to own one right now. Sure, it would be nice to have one, but it’s not on top of my priority list right now. I’m glad you get to see Marbles soon. You have fun with her!

  5. This is GREAT advice!! I known many girls who get their dream-horse and find its not a ‘walk in the park’ so to speak. Maybe if they had read this blog they wouldn’t be in such a hurry.

You write very well, too. Keep up the good work!
