Back in the Saddle

“If you fall off a horse, get back on again.”

I bet you’ve probably heard that phrase a million times. Probably two million times, since you’re a horse girl. Have you ever thought about what it really means though?

My last riding lesson, I fell off the horse. Well, you couldn’t really call it falling off a horse, but it was the closest thing I’ve ever experienced to falling. I was doing this exercise in the saddle where basically you turn around while sitting. I was racing my sister (she was on a different horse) and I was trying to go fast. Then I started to slip off my horse’s right side. I let myself fall and landed on my feet. My teacher laughed and came over. “Need a leg up?” she asked. I got back in the saddle.

Now, that got me thinking about that phrase. It means if you fall of the horse, get back on right away or that fall is going to affect how you feel about riding. It might scare you so badly, you never want to ride again. But, you get back in the saddle and face your fear.

So, I was thinking, what if it can apply to different areas of your life?

What if you fall coming on to the stage for auditions and you want to run away? Go back up there and audition like you’re the star. What if you get all mixed up speaking in front of a large crowd? Take a deep breath and speak clearly. What if you find that you are wearing two different socks at school? If you can’t change them, walk with a purpose. Don’t walk with a blush on your face because you’re ashamed of your feet. What if you mess up trying something new? Learn from your mistake and come back stronger.

Get back in the saddle and try again.
