Beat the January Blues

January BluesIt isn’t only us girls who are suffering from the January blues with a new school year, loads more homework, and all the usual stuff. Ponies could be feeling a bit under the weather too, so make sure they are happy this winter!

To start with, all ponies need a big comfy bed, especially when it’s cold outside. Give your pony an extra special big bed to keep him snuggly and warm. Don’t forget some extra hay, too, as it will keep him warm!

If it’s cold outside when you want to ride, think of your pony. You have a big coat, and yes they do have a coat. But if your horse is clipped then you will have to keep him warm somehow. One way is to ride in an indoor arena if you have one. If not, put an exercise sheet on him to keep him a bit warmer.

Spend loads of quality time with him. Your pony will love a warm bed, some nice food and a warm ride but he will be extra pleased if you just spend time with him. Give him a nice groom, but not a full one or he will loose some of the oils and fats in his coat that help keep him warm. Talk to him and just play with him. He will love you even more and you will build an amazing bond!

So, now you know what to do — get a big coat, your hat, scarf and gloves, and go to the stable to see your pony!

  1. That is so nice! I love seeing my ponies in there paddock nickering at me in the morning when I go to feed them. I always like to groom each of my seven ponies as often as I can in the winter. They often get things stuck in their woolly Shetland coats. :)

  2. Great advice Sweetie! Now when the time comes I’ll know how to beat the January blues for horses (actually it’s more like June, July and August blues in Australia), and I guess now all I’ve got to worry about are mine. Today I just started my first day of high school. :))

  3. he he. i liked the end! good advivce! i wish it was winter here in Aussie right now… getting up around 5am on Pony Club days and trying to find your horse amongst the fog… also gota be careful when riding in wet wether conditions! good blog!

  4. yer Madelanina… June July and August blues. anyway it means the same no matter where u live! i started high school just a few days ago too! lol. gotta make sure if your horse has a rug that there is no holes in it and that it is water proof and warm enough! i love the pic on it too! it’s good that u put in bout not grooming them too hard coz lots of them could loose lots of wheght and health coz their winter coat has been striped off by grooming!

  5. Thanks guys :). You’re lucky, I started back at school a few days after new years day. Has anyone had any snow yet? We’ve been having loads of people saying we’ll get snow, but it’s obviously not here!
