Autumn Horse
by HorseFeathers, age 16

Dear Readers,

I am writing to you from my old wooden desk, here up north in the States. My little tawny, long-haired cat is purring away like a mountain lion next to the fireplace. The air is definitely chilly and I can already see my breath in the air. Thanksgiving is right around the barn and we all have something to be thankful about — HORSES. Am I right girls?

The trees look as if they were splattered by paint from God’s personal palette. Not too long ago, Izzy, my Andalusian riding horse, tried to scarf down a red leaf. I guess she didn’t like the taste because after she spit it out, the leaf didn’t look like a leaf anymore. Carmel apples, cider, popcorn balls, molasses oatmeal cookies and my favorite hayrides are many of the little details I love about autumn. Am I making you hungry?

I am going to get one last trail ride in before the snow hits. Winter is not too far away and sleigh rides are coming with it! If you’ve never experienced one I advice you to try it. The soft breezy snowflakes wafting in your face, the merry bells singing in rhythm with the trotting gait of the horse, the… well you’re just going to have to try it for yourself.

When the seasons come I advise you to try photography. Winter and autumn are several of the perfect times to photograph horses of course. Look for detail, details, details! For instance, one time after it snowed little icicles formed on the bottom of Izzy’s stomach on top of her furry winter coat. She broke them off by rolling in the fluffy snow.

Well I’m getting ahead of myself. For right now, I implore you to get outdoors and enjoy what we have left of this champion autumn here in the United States. As for y’all in Australia or other warm countries, enjoy your sunny days with best horse friends. As for me, I’m going to go get some cider!

All the very windy best,

HorseFeathers

  1. I loved it HorseFeathers! I really enjoyed reading it. At the beginning I was talking about how it had been snowing. But now we have been blessed with a pretty good fall. Today its supposed to be near 60 so I’m happy about that. I hope this wonderfall ( haha ;-) ) weather stays ALL November. Usually Novembers are snow filled for my cold state :-)

I loved it! You perfectly described the wonderful days of fall! :-)

  2. Ohh, yeah I’ve been takin lots and lots of pictures! Of pretty much anything outside! And this blog makes me want to take a sleigh ride!!! lol. *sigh* In Ohio, its pretty nice. I think I just got my Indian summer, lol. The big tree in my backyard hasn’t dropped very many leaves so I’ll be out there till likely Thanksgiving raking, raking, raking… ouch. I can already feel the blisters, haha. My back aches already. But its worth it, then I can jump in the piles! lol

  3. It is so funny! I LOVE your descriptions of everything, including your cat! When I saw this blog on the calandar I couldn’t wait to see what it was about! Now I am glad it is finally here! My puppy brings in leaves all the time to try and eat so I have to chase her to get them back outdoors. The colors are SOOOO amazing! Who would have thought such green leaves could be so read? So bright orange? So yellow! And each color has a sprinkle of another color mixed with it! I love this season! Well….I could do without the wind. BRRR!

    Great blog!

  4. Yay! Autumn is the BEST time for riding. I didn’t ride this fall because there are no horses around here :-( But I used to ride in the fall with my friend. And it’s already snowing lots up here in Canada!

  5. Amen, girl! just about the only thing you CAN do in winter is take pictues!

  9. CANADA!! canada is awesome! xD ok moving on past the spazzyness I LOVE LOVE LOVE FALL! ok so maybe not past the spazzyness…and have you ever seen a palomino up against a red leaved tree? My Pally has found a fondness of one and i need to get a pic of him under it cause he looks awesome :) I could live without winter too Vi..but my B-Day is in december so im good with it :) awesome blog!

  11. Wanderful! I love how you really put your self in your righting.

  12. Here in Canada, today’s been raining, hailing, and sun, and most of all WIND! Lol anyways, I’m certainly gonna take pictures, especially with my fave horse, yep, you know it, the one and only Jersey! :) I love when the horses get their winter coats, its so cute! Haha some of the horses got mini icicles on their whiskers! Though the only past I don’t like about winter riding is riding with snowpants, cause you can barely move. I think I might just layer with pants, :) I love fall, too! Its beautiful, with the leaves changing colors, but that means more racking for me.. Well thats it for now. I’ll go get my hot cocoa.

  13. Grr not past, I meant thing.

  14. HorseFeathers,

You really captured the spirit of autumn in this blog. It’s as if I can almost see what you’re writing. Very descriptive and poetic.

  15. I gotta say its pretty cool that all these girls from different countries can get together :-) How many ARE from Canada? In Minnesota it snowed earlier this fall, but surprisingly its been a pretty good fall. Though the leaves were gone by the end of September :-( too much rain I guess.

I’ve never gone riding in the snow, but we have an outdoor skating rink near my house that I practice at and it can get really cold (not as cold as Canada I’m sure) so whenever I skate I were these legging type shorts under my pants. It is a little warmer :-)

I love drinking tea in the fall. It’s the best. My whole family is tea crazy! :-)

I really loved your blog HF. Like everyone said, its like your talking to a friend and it was REALLY enjoyable to read!!!! :-)

  16. Thanks everyone its well appreciated! I myself am a proud Ohioan! Go Bucks! (football) lol. Anywho enjoy whats left of the season!

  17. Hey, Pal’s Pal and Wild’N'Free, you’re not the only ones with December birthdays! Mine too! And WesternMare, I totally know what you mean about riding in snowpants. Aggravating, but I’ve gone riding in -30 weather, so I guess it’s needed! That’s life in Canada for ya!

  18. I love autumn!Graet blog horsefeathers!p.s.are you hoprrsefeathers like the horsefeathers books by Dandi Daley Mackall?

  19. This blog put me at a calm ease, I’m practically sighing in contentment right now! The weather’s gone a bit chilly, so I can luckily get a feel of your beautiful descriptions. Wonderful and creative job, HorseFeathers!

  20. It has alreay snowed in Canada! Gulliver is getting hard to spot in thewhite snow!

  21. Lucy Digro- no ive had this nickname even before i knew about those books. However i own several of that series and i enjoy them very much! ;0) Thanks again mates!

  24. HorseFeathers,

I just looked at the “Tranquility” picture of Izzy in the gallery. It is a photo, isn’t it, and not a drawing? Did you take it? It’s very good…looks like it should be on a calendar.

    -Raven

  25. Raven- yes its a photo. I took it and edited it with picnik.com. =0) Thanks for the complement!

  26. Wow, your description of Autumn is really good, it’s my favorite season, but the only thing that changes here where I live, is the weather…Sometimes. So when winter comes along, I savor every moment of it. I have memories of wonderful winter times when it snowed, which is very, very rare for us I have to sadly admit…I can’t stand summer, just the heat kills me, I’m much more a cool weather person. For some reason, when Autumn and Winter come along, it just puts me in a happier, cheerier mood. :) I don’t know, it’s just me, but that’s what happens.

  27. I have ALWAYS wanted my birthday to be in October, I’m not sure why, but I have always have wanted my birthday to be in the fall more than anything, close to winter, but not smack in it. My birthday is in January and i just hate that! Right at the beginning of the year, how much worse can my luck get?

Madelaina- This made me feel the same why, that’s why I love fall, it’s so peaceful…

  28. The closest I can get to leaves that change colors, are the leaves on my tree’s when they die…lol how poetic

  29. Nevada Sunshine- lol thank you. The trees dont die you could say “until the breath of spring arrives the trees are painted with a blanket of reds, oranges, and browns as they readily slumber for their winter nap.”

    thanks again mates
