A poem is a story,
words flowing as a song,
it is a description,
as a rhythm with words,
like horses’ hooves prancing,
or their manes flowing as they run.
Horses in my poems
you would think that they belong.

In our little poems,
our stories with a song,
hooves prancing,
gives us rhythm,
the mane flowing,
gives us song.

Every time I read my poem,
I think of the swaying rhythm,
of a canter,
or a short choppy little thought,
like a trot,
and a beautiful wild poem,
with amazing rhythm gallops on and on.

I saw you in the pasture,
you nickered for me,
I set down your grass hay,
on the dusty paddock floor,
You looked at me with those soft chocolate eyes,
I know you want some more.

When I was little,
I followed you around.
I played with your mane,
When I was sad you kept me sane.

Now I am much older,
My priorities have changed.
But I can guarantee
me and you.
That won’t change.

We are a once upon a time,
We are a dream….
My life is in the pool,
My heart is in the pool,
But here,
In a sense.
Here, I left my soul.

I promise though
on the dusty paddock floor
I will stay with you
forever….
And then some more

My dark horse in the night,
you stand with pride,
your head held high,
your muscles gleam,
against the moon,
your breath steams,
against the midnight air.

And you hold that little aura,
that little streak of wild,
that makes your eyes scream,
and it seems,
we could never be a team,
Your head holds defiance,
but you whisper reliance.

So here you are,
next to me,
my dark horse.

by Ginger, age 11

OK… here’s the deal.

I am making progress with my new welsh but she’s too young for me to be training to ride, so we might just give her back.

I haven’t ridden a horse in two months.

We are looking into buying or leasing a new horse, but…

Lately it has become a issue to make time in my life for horses, because…

Swimming is becoming more and more important and time consuming. And finally…

I just got my appendix removed

Oh, did I mention I did a Ride and Tie two months ago?

Over ‘Spring Break’ I realized something. Girls Horse Club was one of the most important of the decreasing things that keep me hanging onto horses. About the week before I got my appendix removed I started thinking about where everything was going (with horses). I love my ponies, but as far as riding goes I have been taking a bit of a break.

The ride and tie (a cross between a marathon and endurance race involving two people and a horse) turned out to be a rather disastrous, humiliating, experience because — to make a long, long, story short — I got lost on the horse and my partner had to run for like three miles straight, not knowing where I was on her horse.

After that I stopped riding horses at her house and focused a lot more on swimming. Swimming lately has become more of a passion than a hobby. I love it. I love the adrenaline rush before a race. I love it when the timer gives you your time and it turns out to be a Junior Olympic cut or best time, then you jump up and down and run towards your coach. I love chilling at meets, waiting for events, I even love practice. And I guess you could say it has kind of pushed horses farther out of the picture lately.

And I am not scared. I know that swimming is something I want to pursue, I know it’s a gift, but I know horses are beautiful things I love. So while I might take breaks from riding, and while I might not always have that magic, fairy tale girl-horse connection, I will always love those moments. The moment when Chiquita or “the new Welsh” approached me herself for the first time, that moment last night just at sunset when I sat there feeling awful because of the appendix surgery, and clinging onto Roxy’s little neck.

Those are the beautiful moments that keep me making time for horses in my life.

My Horse is mine,
And she will be ’til the day she dies,
Because when I look in her eyes,
I think she really sees me,
For me,
She doesn’t see the person we continually paste across face,
She doesn’t see the perky personality,
That isn’t really true,
She sees you.

She sees the tracks of tears that run down your face,
She sees your feelings are of inferiority,
Your feelings of disgrace,
She doesn’t see the person you put on in front of everyone,
Even when you feel so pathetic,
Even when you look in the mirror and secretly feel sick,
She sees you.
Even when broken and sad,
She sees you.

Can’t you see?

I will never understand what goes on,
and it is really driving me insane,
someday when horses and humans are together for eternity,
you will see what I mean,
you will hear my voice,
And I will understand,
what goes on in that forbidden land,
And I will know,
the feelings of confusion,
the terror,
and the fear,
you hear.

by Ginger, age 11

In Saying Goodbye I told you Lady got taken back to her old home. Well, that very same day she got sold. I don’t know much about the lady who bought her, but that she had a young daughter. To hear she already was sold was really sad because now I know I will never ever get to say goodbye.

About four days ago the new horse, Chiquita, got trailered to our house. Chiquita is a one and a half year-old Welsh Pony who is already over twelve hands (which is really tall for a Welsh her age). The challenging thing is, as a baby her mom was so overly protective, so she got pretty much no human interaction whatsoever. When she got older she was handled a bit, but she is still not quite used to humans. So at this point I’m just getting her used to being touched and being approached.

She is a lot different from Lady who would follow you around everywhere you went, but I have to remember there was a time when Lady acted the same as Chiquita does now.

It is really really sad to think that I will never see Lady again, but I guess I just have to remember all those hilarious, happy, and even sad times we experienced side-by-side.

Some of you may know that I had a little Welsh pony I was training and her name is Lady. Well, Lady is not mine, she is actually my friend’s horse. They let me have her for a while and said I could train her. I had her for eight months and I took her training seriously, as you can see in my blog Happy Birthday to You.

Well very early in the morning on day last week, she got taken away. A few days ago my friends asked me if instead of Lady I would like a bigger Welsh, and they would try to sell Lady. I agreed because I am too big for Lady and sometimes feel guilty riding her. Today she got taken away and sometime today a bigger Welsh is going to be here for me. I did not get to say goodbye to Lady because I had a swim meet and my parents did not want to wake me. I did not realize how much I would miss that little devil of a horse. We have had many times together in these 8 months. She has comforted me when I was sad, I have told her all these secrets, and told her I love her dearly, and then there were the times I was so mad at her I cried.

So I am excited to start to build a relationship with the new pony. However, Lady, I love you and I will miss you alot.

you were once free
for a moment in time
you sang with the wind
you ran with the sky
now ropes bind you in
and it seems like a sin
a bit in your mouth
it doesn’t belong

baby you belong
singing with the wind
running with sky
if you aren’t free
you’d be happier to die
so i will feel your mane whipping my face once more
and together we will soar
then it’s time for you to be set free
but baby someday come back to me

by Ginger, age 11

I watched my little cousin Kayla proudly walking on my little chestnut Roxy with her hands spread out like a airplane. She wore a huge smile on her face that was screaming “I’m doing it!” It was her sixth birthday, so I led her around on my little miniature horse Roxy.

It was so nice to see Roxy being ridden again (I haven’t done that since I was about seven). My little Roxy is getting to be quite the oldie so I gave her a rest and put Kayla on Lady, my two year-old Welsh Pony. I started training Lady about four months ago and she is being absolutely incredible. She belongs to my friends who have many horses, and so I took her on. Since Lady is just being trained and Kayla is only just turning six, I first lunged Lady for quite a while, then rode her myself, then led Kayla, then finally let her steer herself. And I must say, for a six year-old she has amazing coordination and grip.

So here my little six year old cousin is, bareback, riding a two year-old Welsh Pony around the paddock. Lady was on her best behavior, and when Kayla would even lean back the slightest bit or tense, lady would “whoa.” I was very proud of both of them and just wanted to share my fun experience of the day. I would be excited if she fell in love with horses the same way I did — at my sixth birthday on the pony rides!
