City Shine and Country Rest

I’m sitting on my window seat surrounded
by my horse blanket I’ve had since I was an infant

I never had a horse, never ridden one for that matter
Living in an apartment in a sixteen story building doesn’t help things either

But now I just sit staring up at the sky
Even though its night there is hardly a star visible in the sky

All but the northern star that shines though the city’s musky
odors and smoke; ever shining, ever true.

I cannot help but wonder, is there a horse and her girl
somewhere out there in the world

Are they at rest in a field of clover and barley
sharing a late night snack of fresh carrots?

Do they seem happy where they are or do they
wish to explore the earth as I do?

Perhaps, could it be night there as well and could they
be looking up at that same sky and same northern star
thinking about a girl like me?

  1. Beautiful HF. I’m starting to wish that I looked at a northern star in the sky and wrote that as I would be given so much praise!!! lol
Anyways, I’m thinking about that stuff now…

  2. Thank you. Oh and if anyone was thinking that this poem or others are all about me.. they’re not. I live in the country thank goodness for me. I just like to explore the thoughts of different horsey people and how they might see the world.

  4. ROLF Mustang23 yeah lets call it the suberbs… right there in the middle somewheres. lol+0) Glad you like it

  5. This is a very thoughtful, amazing piece…good job HorseFeathers!

  6. Wow, you always incorporate deep meaning and horses so well in your poems! I find it’s those little details you include that make everything so much more vibrant. The connection with the two girls and the northern star is simply beautiful as well. This poem is certainly no exception from all of your other stunners!

  7. wow i like it! i used to live in the not so big city when i was little

  8. Although I don’t exactly live in the “big city” but I don’t live in they country either. But I do always think like that, “is there another girl out there like me?” Is she sitting on on the fence in late afternoon patting her horses head?” I always wonder..what am I saying, my mind is always wondering, lol

  9. Whoops, I said too many “buts” sorry, incorrect grammar!

  10. lol Nevada Sunshine, thank you very much.. i always like to look out at the stars.. which shine brightly where i live, and think about all the people across the world. Remembering that horse girls dont just live in the contry but in the city as well.
