Convincing Non-Horse-Loving Parents About Horses

Horses. Some people can’t live with them; some people can’t live without them. Here is a guide for you horse-lovers on how to convince your not-so-horse-loving parents to give you riding lessons.

1) Be RESPECTFUL!!! Do you really think the more you yell at your parents and disobey them, the more likely they are to give you a horse? Seriously!

2) Warm your parents up to the idea. I promise it is so much easier to ask your parents about horses if you randomly spout facts about horses, comment on horses you see in pastures by the road when you are driving, and talk about how much fun you had riding last weekend. It would be really, REALLY great if your parents go riding with you one time. I know sometimes this isn’t possible, though. Just don’t spring horses on them all of a sudden. It doesn’t work. I’ve tried!

3) Plan, plan, plan! Offer to pay for some of the cost of owning a horse or taking riding lessons. Plan days and times you could have lessons, or prove to your parents you have time for a horse. You could make a deal about keeping your grades and extra activities up, too. Parents love charts and letters!!

4) Before you ask, be extra good! When you are grounded or in trouble is not a good time to ask. Get all your stuff done well and early. Make good grades.

5) Asking your parents: Show them your letters and/or charts (you made them, right?) explain to them why you would like to have a horse or take riding lessons. Don’t push them! If you are having trouble asking without them interrupting, don’t argue! Calmly write them a letter at a later time answering their questions and explaining stuff they didn’t understand. It is really hard to interrupt a letter! Remember that your parents have good reasons for what they are saying. A main reason my parents are still a little hesitant about me riding is that they are afraid I will get hurt.

This is a process. I, myself, am using it and my parents are warming up to riding lessons. It really works!

  1. I like the way you list everything a parent might ask if you wanted riding lessons.

  3. Thanks guys! This seriously works! My parents agreed that if I can prove I’m responsible enough, they’ll give me horse riding lessons for Christmas.

  4. Good luck with your riding lessons Allison! Once your parents have agreed to lessons, convincing them to let you start taking them would be so much easier. This blog would help those who want to have horse riding lessons greatly, including a few of my friends. Thanks a lot, and great work!

  5. i will totally try that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  6. Wow. I feel so fortunate now. My parents never gave me any trouble in having riding lessons. I really wanted a horse, but now I’m okay where I am because one of my trainers horses and I are really going somewhere. Great blog.

  7. both parents don’t care about them, nor my sister or brother.but i love them.im going to be a vetrinarian.the only horses my mom iscomfortable to be around is my fav horse cha-ching.
shes also a little nervous when im around horses period.its hard.
    question:
do ur parents get nervous around horses?

  8. My parents are VERY nervous around horses, maddy! They are terrified for me every time I ride! My parents are a little better about that now after I convinced them to go on a trail ride with me at camp and they (I think, but they won’t admit it) fun. They are still a little scared because whoever saddled my horse didn’t saddle him right and the saddle was slipping a little bit.

  9. I CANT BELIEVE IT.LOL
