Do Horses Sense Ghosts?
Published by GHC • Nov 13th, 2009 • Category: Odds & Endsby Peanut, age 9
Hey guys! I want to tell you something…
Me and my friend took a ride on this trail. At the side of the trail, there is a creepy old house. No one lives in it and the roof is covered with moss — it’s obviously been abandoned. So we trotted up a little hill, and we were now going in the direction of this house. Our horses had been okay the whole way, until now. We fell off the trail, but we still kept walking. By now we could see the barn. I wasn’t paying enough attention to realise that we were heading towards the house.
I turned Gulliver around and headed back, but as we turned around he spooked and ran away. Muskoka did the same for Katie. So we rode away, shocked. When we reached the exit, Muskoka began to gallop away, and Gulliver followed. They went unusually crazy.
Then I began to wonder… Was there a ghost? So please tell me what you think. We are going back equipped to see if there is a ghost, and when we go back to the house we will be prepared!

I really don’t believe in gohsts, but maybe. Some horses run back to the stables after a trail ride. It’s a bad habbit, but it can happen. I still like the idea of horses sinsing gohsts though, and I think it would be really fun to go and see if they really do.

I do not believe in ghosts but i do believe in spirits. In the KJV of the Bible it talks about the spirits of the dead appearing unto their loved ones. Anywho as a word of advice I wouldnt automaticaly assume its “immortal” happenings. What else was happening on the trail that day? Could the horses have been spooked by a rabbit or other small creature? Horses are prey animals so they are wary about their surroundings almost all the time. Espeicaly when your out on the trail with your horses you need to be observent, calm, and in control.. because Gulliver can sence what you feel. Also if the house is old there’s the possibility that it could be falling apart, as well as the barn. NEVER go into an abandoned building alone.. make sure an adult is with you for safety. I would set up an experiment with an adult if i were you. Walk the horses, from the ground, to the exact area that they spooked. Let them sniff around the spot and tell them there’s nothing wrong. If there is no apparent danger you need to let your horse know that this part of the trail is safe and that he should feel safe when you ride him around here. Again think about your friend’s safety, your horse’s safety, and your own at ALL times. I hope you find out what made your horse’s spook like that.
Best of luck

Exactly HorseFeathers!! That is exactly what I was going to say and what I think. So HF’s reply is pretty much mine.
It wasn’t ghosts, probably just and animal that spooked them. There it’s summed up. :-) (cept we use NKJV :-) )
Peanut, that sounds like a fun ride, and maybe inspiration for a good horse mystery! You have a way of thinking about/looking at things that’s very refreshing and uniquely you — don’t lose that perspective, especially in your writing!
Many cultures (past and present) believe horses are connected to the spirit world and/or that horses have super powers. I’ve read a lot of books (fiction and non-fiction) and articles about Native Americans, Celts, Asian cultures, etc. If you’re open to considering different perspectives, it’s fascinating and definitely inspires story ideas.
But as someone who also loves science and math along with topics that require a ‘leap of faith’, I have to agree with CC and HF — odds are your horses spooked at some real world thing that you and your friend don’t sense in the same way your horses do.
I don’t believe in ghosts, but wouldn’t that be a cool mystery?!! (Yes, I am a writer. I get inspiration from everything!) lol
I personally do not believe in Ghoast. Because I am a Christian I belive, as the Bible says, when people die they cannot come back to earth. The only exception was when Jesus Christ rose fromt he dead. Since ghoasts are ‘dead’ living on earth, I do not believe in them.
But it is still fun to pretend they exist, for writing stories and such. Althought I will not, and can not, ever believe in them, I sometimes make up stories about them for a good chill.
Sounds like an exciting time you had, but there could have been something else spooking them. Or perhpas they wanted to get home. Did they act afraid or excited? Try to pay attention next time and let us know.
Hey Peanut- mysterious and well-written blog! I agree with HF completly- don’t go in that house! Animals- especially horses- can sense amazing things. I personally don’t believe in ghosts- but it could be something dangerous. Weird people often hang out in abandoned places, and demons do exist. Even though it probably was a regular thing, be careful! :]
Peanut, are you going to write a story about that trail ride? if not…..YOU SHOULD! i can sense that it’ll make a brilliant story! especially with your talent…you could turn it into the best story of all time…. :D I think it’s a good idea! Maybe you should try it….. :D

Ya, I guess.I still think it is fun to go ghost hunting! (espcially on horseback) we also walked the trail. Horses do sense death though. We rode it twice and we got the same reaction bothtimes. It could just be a dead animal, though youd think we’d see anyhting.
Thanks!
Peanut
Well I don’t believe in real ghosts they are just part of our imagination. But this sounds like it could be turned into a great story. And I think you are just the person to write it. I’ll be looking foreard to reading it.
Peanut,
Maybe the horses sensed your fear and bolted because of that. Whatever it was, your blog was very interesting and well-written.

Ok, like Vi (in the sense of “supernateraul” and im a Cristian) i dont think it at all possible (nor is it logical) to believe this house is “haunted”. i agree with Jonannah, it was most likly a small animal or somthing at first. horses can pick up on anticipation ect. you most likly were waiting for somthing to happen, they picked up on, possibly sensed fear, and let the flight instict take over. Mind if i steal the idea for a storey? and please be careful round that house, creeps and somtimes criminals hang around supposedly “hanted” places because no one dares to come near them. Hope you had fun on Gulliver ;) and if you do go “ghost hunting” PLEASE take an adault with you, and try to look at things the sientifical way when “odd ocorrences” take place. :)
DEFINITELY a ghost! :D I am a complete believer. I’ve seen way to many episodes of A Haunting, and listened to stories from my friends, as well as my own experience. I believe that all animals have that sixth sense. I also believe there is something weird with my own house. Every single pet that I’ve had has been staring at the ceiling in my room whenever there there as well as growling at the walls.
It could’ve been an animal. But they spooked the second time too. Raven you have a point, but we didn realy fear it. I dont really belive in ghosts, but you nevr know! And ya, im writng the story!
Peant and Gully
Michelle- sometimes it is kinda fun or mysterious like to think that a certain place is haunted or spooky. I to believe that animals can sense different situations than we can like a storm coming, or smell danger approaching. I just want to give a word of advice that you really shouldn’t always relate to television or even book statements about the “supernatural” world. Somtimes your imagination can cause you to act differently or do something that might hurt yourself or others in the process. I know your a horse girl and we have to think logicaly to the situation. Actualy, i have growling in my walls to.. its my little wild colt of a brother trying to scare me in the next room. lol. =0)
Oh and Peanut- is Gulliver afraid of storms.. and did one occur the evening after the trail ride?

Aww HF lemme have a little fun :) paranormal activity is just the coolest thing unless it’s one of those ghosties that try to kill everyone o.o
lol Michelle.. its alright to imagine things or believe in them if you want to but just dont let that get in the way of the reality of a situation. Ghost stories are really fun but as far as i know they are ALL in the fiction category. ;0) I gotta go muck out another stall.

Having another LeadMare moment here…
It’s not my job to tell you what you should or shouldn’t believe, nor is it anyone else’s job at GHC. I’m sure y’all have a real world family to help with that.
We’re here to have FUN expressing our love for horses. The question of Peanut’s blog is not “do you believe in ghosts?” it’s “do horses sense ghosts?” If you don’t believe in ghosts, your answer is probably no, with some logical explanation for why the horses spooked. If you do believe in ghosts, you’ll have a different perspective.
Peanut, sorry for being nippy on your blog… That actually is my job.
Sounds like you had a very exciting ride! It’s really hard to predict what horses sense, it might’ve been a ghost, or just some movement or smell that people can’t sense. But I have heard that humans don’t have this “connection” that other animals do. Horses are such interesting creatures we can never figure out their limits, not as if they have any of course. Whatever it was, have fun on your ghost-hunting, and be careful! I’d love to hear if something else happens.
lolz. Its fine leadmare!
Horsefeathers-Gully is afraid of storms, but one hasnt occoured in days!
Peant, if there ar eany hunters near the area, is it a possibility they heard shots, didnt know what it was, and bolted?
After all of this, I believe Pal’s Pal- a horse I rode a few days ago spooked at a gunshot- which is just another reason why you should be careful. During hunting season, wear colorful clothing so hunters don’t think you and your equine pal are wildlife!
i sense ghost cuz i have a psychic ability lik horses!,please don’t call me crazy
Jadethemagicatgirl- i dont think your crazy. Some people also have a type of “sixth sense” where they might feel something is coming before it does like that thing called “ESP”. Personaly, i think all horse girls have to have some type of sixth sense to know dangerous situations when they come up. I don’t know about the psychic stuff but some people do spot or hear things that others do not.
This was a great blog Peanut

Wellthanks. There are definatley NO hunters near my barn.
