First Beginnings

First BeginningsMama brings her little girl to a barn
Little kittens are playing with bits of straw

The little one hears a call, one she’s never heard
Escaping from her mother’s grasp
she runs to find who made this wonderful sound

As soon as she turns the corner
a long, kind face reaches down

What is this thing?
It smells and looks more beautiful
than anything the little girl has seen

Two worlds collide
Two nations unite

Mama finds them both
Little girl gazing up into brown eyes
Tall stallion staring down into hazel ones

The small one learns that this
Magnificent creature is called a ‘horse’

She regrets the moment mama
Says they have to leave
And cries silently on her mother’s sleeve

They told her she’d grow out of this childish stage
That she’d like boys when she came of age
But the young girl knew where her savvy would always belong in life

Now, if this young woman grows and has children of her own
She will take them to that barn, for the first time

Worlds will collide,
Nations will unite once again.

Authors Note: I wrote this poem in the exact way I remember it about nine years ago. The first time I met one of these magnificent creatures will stay within my memories forever. Even as I grow older and eventually leave GHC, I will never forget any one of you in my thoughts and prayers.

  1. *sniffles* well miss you when you do leave GHC. Ive never had problems with my mom or dad with horses, though my dad doesnt exactly get how special horses are. My mom rode when she was little though, so she understands. I love your poem HF, Keep writing and lovin’ horses ;)

  2. This was awesome with a tinge of sadness. You’re such a great writer and on your bio it says that you’re like an older horse sister to the rest of the fillies-that will definitely be missed!

  3. Ah HF, must you leave? YOu are such an inspiration to me, all of us! We’ll miss you more than anything! Who will tell me how to improve my art? Who will inspire us with that Horse Feathers touch? Who will be the older barn sister? *tears fall from eyes* You’ve been great to me since I first joined Girlshorseclub! I’ll miss you!

  4. Oh, please, HF, don’t leave ANYTIME soon! The barn will seem so empty! That was a beautiful poem! Keep it up!

  5. i really liked your poam. i never had problems with my parients. but my horse died last mouth. and i loved her very much. and its hard on me. i dont know if another horse would fell my heart like my other horse did, what do you think i should do hf.

  6. *blows nose on hankie* beautiful. Ill miss you too HorseFeathers… And both my parents think the same way the parents in the poem do. They don’t get how special horses are themselves, but they get how special they are to me and they respect that.
    Im very lucky… :’)

  7. *almost crying* wow. beautiful poem. I remember the first time i saw a horse….it was a police horse named Cenator. He was beautiful….it was at a place called Safety Town…beautiful poem. I love it. We’ll ALL miss you and regret the day you have to leave this wonderful place. My dad doesn’t get horses either (could it just be men that dont get them? no, my riding instructor’s dad ADORES horses…), but my mom had a horse when she was little….now she’s kinda grown out of it though. Keep writing, HF. Keep writing.

  8. I love you all even if I’ve never met y’all personaly. =0) Im turning 17 in January so i think according to the rules i have another year to write. But time goes on and i will be going to vet school soon enough. My parents don’t hate horses but my mum’s allergic so I just have to find champion horse friends to hang out with.

horse lover- You shouldnt befriend another horse to replace the one you loved. You should befriend another horse because he or she needs your love. When i lost my dog i didnt want to get another one because i was afraid to suffer the pain of loosing another. However i learned that i shouldnt be afraid to love.. because every moment is precious.. time waits for noone. Getting or leasing another horse doesnt mean your replacing it means your refilling part of an empty space.

    love you all ,
    HorseFeathers

  9. Wow! I loved every stanza- HF, when you leave I’m going to cry! :[ Every one of your poems is so touching, and I image how you look when I'm reading them. It's nice to know you pray for the girls on GHC- it comforts me, really :]

  10. Great poem! We’ll all miss you if you leave, HorseFeathers. All best, for vet school and everything else :)

    Keep it up,

  11. We will miss you a lot when you leave! My favorite part was when you said, “Worlds will collide,
Nations will unite once again.” You know, most people do expect girls to forget about horses, and alot of girls do. But some, it’s just not possible to lose such a big part of us. Anyways, great job!

  12. Wow! heart touching!!!! i almost cried! (good thing i didn’t or i’d be laughed out of the house) it is so beatuiful!!! i have always loved horses and i regret having to go to big citys instead of staying on my farm girl/cowgirl farm. thanks for touching my heart!

  13. Even though I’m fairly new to GHC, I will miss u when you leave HF. Love the poem and hope you will still visit!

  14. I really like your poem, and it is good insporation for me in school, since in writing class I am learning the structure and how a beautiful poem can make people see things in a new way. Just like this poem does….

  15. I barely know you, HorseFeathers, and we’ve never really….talked in a regular convorsation….but i’ll be real sad when ya leave. I feel like all ya’ll are my best friends, and that if any of you leave or i have to leave, i’ll die. Let’s just spend every moment possible here…..where our hearts can be free to roam as they wish to be. :D Beautiful poem, and I <3 ya'll like sisters!!!!

  16. Amazing poem. It’s truly an ispration to all. It helps us remeber, and cherish that day we first saw a horse, and how now we have come to love them. I think it really ties all of the horse lovers out there together in it’s message. It was heartfelt, and so beautiful. I could almost Imagine I was there with you. Yea also this is amazing because most girls end up forgetting horses, and this poem is to help remind them why they used to love them. WE WILL MISS YOU!!!!!! Love your writing!
