Flicka Movie & Animal Cruelty

One of the latest movies about horses, Flicka, should be boycotted, and after you read this I think you’ll agree with me.

I was surfing the web and found a link to “My Dead Flicka.” During the making of the movie Flicka, two horses died. They did not die naturally either. The first horse supposedly died due to a very rare injury causing it to be euthanized. The second died two weeks later in a wild horse race. I also found on this site what a wild horse race is. Click here for more information and to see videos of wild horse racing, a rodeo event.

Why would anyone put animals, especially horses, through this kind of pain? The answer: For money. The Human Society discovered this case of cruelty. Are there others that are suffering that haven’t been discovered?

Now, please support my decision to boycott this movie. Although it has already been out for a while, we can still do our part.

EDITOR’S NOTE: We encourage anyone who loves animals to stand behind your beliefs. Thanks for being such a great example Julia!

We also want to assure that information published here is accurate and presents the full story. We found some articles presenting another viewpoint about what happened on the set of Flicka. Here are two from the American Humane Association, a non-profit that has overseen movie sets since 1940 to make sure animal actors stay safe:

AHA: Q & A About Flicka
AHA Review of Flicka

The web has a HUGE amount of information from a diverse range of sources, which means we have to distinguish between fact and opinion when forming our own viewpoint. We also have to look at the motivation and credibility of the source. Do the research to be informed, and always JUDGE FOR YOURSELF.

(Hmmm, where have you heard that before?) ;)

  1. I’ve not seen this movie, and after reading this blog, and links, I don’t want to! This is awful,so cruel! Money! Cruel idiots, thats what these people are!

  2. I found A website called “My Dead Flicka” too. I couldn’t believe what the producers did! I thought it was a good movie too! Cruel!

  3. So they filmed a movie and it costed the lives of two horses? Is this Flicka movie about the wild black Mustang? How can they do that? I’m just…speechless and horrified. My mouth can catch millions of flies!

  4. I’m very glad you posted about it, thanks for taking me out of the obscure.

  5. I watched the 5 movies and at the end i was so upset and frustrated that I started crying and tried not to abuse the computer screen lol. How can people do this? Do they not know that animals are living, breathing creatures??? We should do it to them to see how they like it!

  6. Then mabye they could understand the pain and they won’t do it again. ):

  7. They should get sued!

  8. Good idea Racie Ponie! (I hope we can do it!)

  9. Look at the impact this one simple blog has had. Just a little awareness created quite a few people shocked at what goes on and is involved in animal cruelty, not just in movies but in everyday life. If everyone together knew about events like these and stood up for what they believed in, no matter if they are for or against it, could we stop animal cruelty altogether?

  10. That will take a lot of guts.

  11. -speachless…- for one thing, i think if people were more aware about what’s really going on with animal cruelty, we could stop it all together.

  12. why do people do such cruel things like catching horses then trying to get them on the ground? It makes me throw up when I realise that they don’t see horses as animals, just as money and entertainment. And I think rodeo’s in America are cruel as well.

  13. I know its disgusting and cruel but i liked the movie

  14. THEY SHOULD GET SUED! You think we could actually make a bunch of websites about that and no one will like them anymore and maybe we could send letters to them about how horribly they treated those horses!

  15. I never knew that I shouldn’t watch that movie again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. how we treat animals like that? it’s disgusting!!!!!! we should know better!!!!!!!!!

  17. thats evil! ive neva seen ne of da flicka movies n now i definately dont want 2!

  18. em, they aren’t make a second one you know!!

  19. if you want I can sue them!!!!

  20. you know what I think I’m going to sue them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. WOW

  22. Don’t forget, the SHARK website only has one side of the story. If you read the humane society’s links, there is a completely different oppinion. Something must have gone wrong because there would be no rumors if everything was perfect. However, no one can really do anything unless we know the facts and the truth the way they happened.

  23. Grrrrrrrrrr. Apparently, those horrid movie producers do not know that the Mustang population is slipping away as it is! It is down right disturbing what people will do for money. When I watched the rodeo scenes in the movie, I knew something was up. Seriously everyone, someone could really sue the producers of the movie for animal cruelty. I’m going to make everyone at my stables boycott “Flicka.” Thank you for making such a strong point, Julia.

  24. I want to scream!!!!!! That is one of the most terrible things I ever seen in my life. Animalsrkool, Julia, Madelaina, Marisa, Monica, Racie Ponie, JJ, anna, ponyprincess, and evetyone other girl in the Girls Horse Club needs to do something about this. (Leadmare, could you encourage all girls to read this blog?)

  25. HorsePonyLover and all: We encourage everyone to make your own choice and judge for yourself. As Julia (author of this blog) said in comment #22 above, it’s hard to know what really happened on the set of Flicka. The only thing we know for sure is that two horses died during the filming.

Anytime animals or people perform “stunts” for a movie, there’s a risk of injury or death, even in the best conditions with the best intent. Horses are in a lot of movies so I’m glad there are organizations like the Humane Society and the American Humane Association looking out for their safety. Both are non-profit organizations, so if you want to do something positive, consider becoming a volunteer or making a donation.

As for boycotting Flicka, that’s up to each one of you. I saw the movie a while back (before I knew about the accidents) and liked it, but am very sorry to hear two of the wonderful horse actors died during filming. :(

  26. Although I indeed agree this was very sad, if you didn’t go to the links provided by the Girl’s Horse Club editor for this, then you would see that the horses died on accident and the accidents could not have been prevented. The first horse died from misstaking a well rehearsed step. The second was when a horse stepped on a his 13-foot lead rope and broke his neck. (He got loose from his cowboy). The fallowed the guidelines set up for this and as everyone says: accidents can happen. I don’t agree boycotting this movie will help, as this was an accident.

  27. SUE THEM ANA! =)

  28. Sueing them won’t help, and they’ll have the defense that the what happened to those horses was an accident.

  29. Irish Butterfly is right. No one can sue anyone because none of us know the truth. Besides, none of us are directly related to the film in anyway with any real proof. Even just with this blog it’s my word against yours. There is no right and there is no wrong.

  30. Ya, your’e right…

  31. would every be so worried about it if it was a bull and not a horse? i dont think that you would and for the “My Dead Flicka” site videos of the horse are exactly the same thing that happens to the bulls but no one seams to care about that.

  32. I can sue them!!!it’s the right thing to do!! it’s awful what they did to those horses!!! they can’t get away from it!!! if they try to hide it!!! everyone will find out and get angry really angry!!!

  33. I’m angry really angry!

  34. Anna, you don’t get it. The didn’t do anything to horses, and the AHA does know the truth because they were monitoring the set the whole and time and relized this was all a complete accident! I advise you to read what the Humane had to say about it on the links above if you already haven’t to understand more

  35. That is good to know, Irish Butterfly. Thanks for telling us what happened:)

  36. Tori I do care about the bulls as well, especially what they do to the little calves, they’re just babies! I don’t think anyone should do that to any animal. Animals have as much rights as we do and people need to show them so more respect.

  37. oh, get out of here, iris butterfly you don’t understand they are liable for any living creature they use in their video!!!!!!it in the rulebook!!!

  38. anna: Although the horses are the responsibility of the people who work on the set, accidents can still happen. If you’ve ever ridden a horse (or even if you havn’t) you can imagine just trotting along in an enclosed arena with an instructor there and everything but the horse loses it’s footing and falls, causing it to break it’s leg. It wasn’t your fault, it wasn’t anyone’s fault. I’ve chanched my oppinion a bit after reading the AHA’s report.

  39. I guess we can’t do anything about it then besides gossip behind their backs… I wish there was a way…

  40. Marisa: You can do your part by boycotting the video if you feel strongly about it.

  41. yes but all accidents are caused!

  42. Anna, I’m not trying to slam you, and although the movie filmers were responsible for the horses, the AHA and everyone else knew that the accidents were a mistake. You don’t understand it was an accident and no one could have done anything to prevent it from happening. Remember: I’m not trying to slam you, I’m trying to help you understand, I think you just want to sue because you feel mad, but there isn’t anything to be mad about, because no one caused the deaths. I repeat for [rob the tenth time: IT WAS AN ACCIDENT

  43. We could inform our schools! and the horsebackriding stables we ride at! that could help alittle!

  44. I understand perfectly well!! you don’t care!! no matter how many times you repeat it ought not been listened to you and I’m going to Sue them!!!!!all and I repeat for the second time get out of here!!! Irish butterfly: you make me mad

  45. Please disagree in a way that’s respectful to one another. No one has the right to tell anyone to get out of here, except me.

Let’s not forget we’re all coming from the same position — we love horses and don’t want to see them hurt. How you act on your beliefs is up to you, but the key word is “act.” If all you do is argue and debate, that’s just talk.

Please read the Ground Rules if you have questions about how you’re expected to interact at Girls Horse Club.

  46. Anna: Please understand I do love horses but I don’t want to see you lose your case if you do sue them (although I doubt this would go THAT far) I respect horses and other living creatures and I do mourn the loss over those 2 horses, but they died on accident.
LeadMare: I respect the rules perfectly and do understand that we all love horses and hate seeing one get hurt. I just believe the everyone should know these deaths were accidents and shouldn’t make you mad and upset.

  47. Irish Butterfly, my comment was not directed at you. Even if you haven’t changed how anna feels, you’ve made your point. Sometimes in the heat of an argument (and when accidents happen), things get inflamed by emotion. Human nature…

Thanks for adding your perspective to this discussion.

  48. Thank you, lead mare. I hope I have made my point and can move onto another entry for posting.

  49. A women on Myspace dedicated her whole page to horses. She has videos of people who are against horse slaughter, hunting wild horses, and her backgroung on it says Dead Flicka. Her username is Boycott Flicka.

  50. Okay…

  51. LeadMare: I understand and totally respect the rules but when something like this happens, I get angry!!!!!!!!!!!!

  52. I understand, Anna, but there isn’t anyone to be angry at.

  53. It’s human to feel angry, sad, etc. when something bad happens. Everyone here — anna, Irish Butterfly, Marisa, Julia, etc. — is entitled to their feelings. Sometimes trying to talk someone out of feeling a certain way can make them feel worse.

It’s also human to want to blame someone or something, but that doesn’t change what happened.

    Enough said.

  54. Okay,

Flicka is one of my FAVORITE movies. I think that horses die. If a horse died in a hunter show because it fell over a jump and that hunter show was part of a movie would you guys be talking about this. The owners of the horse knew the risks of putting their horses and the movie and the owners definitely had to sign a contract. I do think that it is wrong to kill horses, but accidents happen! they wouldn’t MURDER the horses and didn’t MURDER them!

  55. WelshQueen: I never said anyone murdered the horses. Two horses died during the making of the movie. It was most likely an accident and the AHA did the best they could to supervise the set. That’s all. :)

  56. Amen to that, Julia.

  57. I agree, accidents do happen and it’s not like they did it purposly.

  58. if it’s a question of accidents see what rachie pony said!!(her last entry)

  59. is what she said was true, than either need to plan ahead or they just weren’t careful enough!!!

  60. oh by the way I’ve noticed that this conversation has turned from caring to skeptical.

  61. if skeptical is the right word

  62. anna: This blog is completely two sided. Either you beleive what happened was an accident or you believe it as done out of carelssness. Either way there are very strong points to believe both. I don’t think the horses were hurt intentionally but you share a different oppinion. Stand up for what you believe in but remember this event has two sides. That’s all. :)

  63. And with the last word coming from the author of this blog (thanks Julia!), comments are now closed. Great discussion!
