Fly Masks

Imagine standing out in a field or stall with a million flies buzzing around you. Annoying? Yes! I hate to have just two annoying flies around me when I am out with my horse. What do you think a horse feels like with flies landing around their eyes, nose and ears? Horses have very sensitive faces, so it really must bug them.

Fly MaskA remedy to keep those annoying flies from off their faces is to get a fly mask. We got one a couple years ago for my horse and it is very useful. There are a bunch of different kinds of fly masks. There are some that cover the ears, eyes and part of the face and some that just cover the eyes and part of their face. There are also some fly masks that can be used while riding. Don’t ride your horse unless it is wearing a fly mask made for riding. Otherwise, the mask interferes with their vision and bridle and it could be dangerous.

The fly mask is see through and you can wash it if it gets muddy. You should take the fly mask off the horse once it starts to get dark because it hinders their vision and they could get it caught on trees or fences.

Fly masks can be bought from a tack store or you can order one online. I would highly recommend getting a fly mask for your horse, whether you own, lease or ride at a barn. (Ask your instructor at your stable if you can use a fly mask while riding one of their horses.)

  4. Great blog! Fly masks are convenient, and so is fly spray. In fact, in the summer time at my old neighbor’s place the horses would trot up to me eager for me to put their fly masks and fly spray on because they knew it kept the horrible pests away! You are so right Blaze’ncowgirl!

  5. I know! Once I was grooming my horse, and it was in the summer. Flies were buzzing around, and even I got annoyed!
