Hard Feelings

by Rebecca Shyly, age 12

Let’s face it. No matter what you do in the horse world, whether it’s showing, or maybe writing about horses, you might not always win. And when that happens it’s hard to let it go. You might wonder ‘am I good enough to do this?’ If that happens you can start to develop a grudge against the person who does better that you. Remind yourself that the competition was just for fun.

Sometimes it can be hard to convince yourself that it was a fair game. You wonder whether or not someone cheated. AVOID THESE THOUGHTS!!!! Unless you have proof (other than your own feelings) do not even go here. It will make you look like a sore loser. We all know that we can be better than that.

Another way to deal with defeat is to think of what that person did differently than you. Don’t change your style and become a mirror of them, but consider working a couple of things they did into your pattern. DO NOT COPY THEM!!! If the winner explained things more than you did in their story, consider making what you were trying to say more obvious. Or if her turns in the show ring were tighter and quicker than yours, work on turns so you can do better next time. If you feel brave you might even ask the winner for some tips!

The hardest thing to admit is that the winner deserved to win. If it was a competition judged by opinion (like our Jr. Blogger finals) just tell yourself that people aren’t ready for your vision—yet. If it was a competition judged by how well you fulfilled the requirements, just tell yourself that the winner might have practiced a little more. What you don’t want to do is put yourself down. Remember that we all have our own talents. Don’t dwell on losing. Look at the positive side of things.

You now know what to work on to be better prepared next time! Most of all remind yourself that at least you tried. Some people do not even have the courage to do that. Your dreams aren’t hopeless, you just need a little more practice.

  1. I love this blog. It’s very true!

  2. This is totally true-I shouldn’t have acted like a sore looser earlier while running for JB, now I’m so happy for the winners. And you know how I can feel happy about it now? We still have horses by our side! :D

  3. There’s not a false word or sentence in that blog. Though I’m not in the JB finals, this blog made me read, stop and then think. You have given excellent examples I can’t find more reason in and is easy to relate to. Great job Horsecrazzz, you have made a huge improvement in your writing!
