Have Fun

Take a step back, look back, and think. Yeah, competing and serious riding is fun (I’m just now getting back into it, yay me!) but every once in a while, isn’t it nice just to have fun with your equestrian buddies? Maybe plan a riding camp out trip, trail ride, or fun show. Maybe you have no idea what to do. Well I’m here to help my fellow horse lovers, equestrians and friends.

ONE.A simple trail ride. Maybe your barn has its own trails or is close to public ones. Whatever your choices, the first thing to do is figure out where to have the trail ride. Next, get together a group of horsey friends who’d like to go on this ride with you. Then plan how to get the horses for this trip. Maybe you have your own, maybe you’ll have to lease, or maybe your instructor is nice enough to let you borrow! Now, set a date and stick to it. Then make a list of what everyone needs to bring. Is one person going to bring food, extra water, etc. Or are you all going to bring your own stuff? Figure it out and have fun!

TWO.A camp out. Pretty much the same concept as the trail ride except you’ll be camping somewhere overnight! You’ll need to find horse friendly trails with campsites located nearby, and you’ll need to bring; tents, sleeping bags, toothbrushes, PJs, whatever you bring to a normal sleepover. If you’re younger you will want an adult to come with you and your friends.

THREE.A fun show. You can call it something else, but the main idea is to get a bunch of your friends together with their horses and have a show. Maybe make it traditional flat, jumping, etc. Or come up with your own crazy classes; jumping bareback, games or relays. Assign someone to be the judge and have fun! Maybe make your own ribbons or come up with your own prizes. Whatever you decide, make it unforgettable.

I hope this has opened your eyes to the other side of the equestrian world — FUN! — and I hope my ideas have inspired you. Feel free to leave comments with your own ideas!

  1. I think they’re wonderful activities to do even when you’re not caught up in the heat of competitive riding. They all sound like excellent fun! I sometimes prefer a relaxing trail ride after a few months of uptight riding lessons, it’s a great way to put a fresh start on things. Brilliant writing on your part too, this is a great blog!

Also LeadMare, it might just be a glitch in my computer, but the number three in the blog shows up as a number one. Thanks.

  2. Thanks for catching that Madelaina.

  3. I love the ideas Syd!

  4. Great Blog Syd! I knew girls that were so into serious competing that they forgot all about the love and the fun of horses! There’s a reason horse back riding is a sport like no other. It can be serious- but it can also be great fun!

  5. So fun!!!
