Helmets: Nuisance or Safety Precaution

Many people around the world ride horses with or without helmets. I ride with helmets, though I do recall I went out riding without one a couple of times.
Some people think, “Oh gosh, it’s such a hot day, and this darn helmet is making me sweat even more. I guess I could take it off for a little while, just until I cool off.” Bad idea. Even in those few minutes, some life-threatening thing could happen. I’m not saying it would, I’m just saying it could happen.
Now some helmets are designed with vents, to allow cool air in and let the heated air out.
Ask yourself this: Would I rather sweat a little more, or crack my skull?
Not a very hard answer, but think on it.
Be safe and wear a helmet.

Very nice blog! thank you for pointing out the dangers of not wearing a helmet
thank you so much for the blog! i totally know what you mean, once I heard a true story in the book Hope Rising, about a little girl. first she was riding a horse, fell of and suffered massive head tramau. She recovered and a year later went to try out a horse. the horse was a childrens horse, with a calm presonality. The girl cantered across the arena then the horse heard something from the freeway, bolted and ran through the arena and to the free way, the girl hung on and tried to stop him with all of her might. as they came up to the freeway she knew she had to jump of so she jumped in the trench next to the `freeway. She suffered magor head injury infact her whole scalp practicall came of her head. If it werent for the helmet she would certainly be dead. Since I heard that story I havet ridden with out a helmet. I know your blog will convence lots of people to wear helmets.
Great blog! As for the question “Would I rather sweat a little more, or crack my skull?”, I choose C, none of the above! Yeah, I wear helmets when I ride!
This is certainly a very nice timely reminder of the importance of riding helmets. Horse riding is a very dangerous sport where basically anything can happen, and we have to always be prepared for the worst. Let’s all be sensible and wear helmets when we ride. Great blog Void :)
so many things can happen and sometimes life is unpredictable. I once hears about a 4 wheeler accident where someone went into a comma for months but came out and if he hadn’t worn his helment he would have died before they even found him.
My trainer’s friend fell off her horse and landed on railroad tracks. Her helmet cracked in half. Had she not had the helmet, it would have been her head!
The reason why most people ride horses but dont wear those black helmets because1:they cant affored one or 2:they dont own a horse.and3:they dont go to riding lessons.
That last part answers everything. Uh, I think I’ll sweat. Great blog, Void. Nice pic, LeadMare!
That is Right! Everyone that is going to be on the back of a horse should have on a helmet. As for the cost, I’d rather pay for a helmet than pay with my life! I hope that everybody wears a helmet while riding. Plus, I think that somewhere you can find an inexpensive helmet that will STILL protect your head. It is an easy choice. I’m with mustang23 on this one!
Eastern Cowgirl, I agree that it’s better to pay for a hospital bill than pay for hospital bills! However, not all helmets are inexpensive that will protect your head. Make sure your helmet is approved, and NEVER EVER buy a used helmet!
Aww. Thanks guys. <3
-fiddles with picture- I love it. :D
