How Do You Let Go?

Have you ever been in love with a lesson horse? Well we all have. But have you ever had your favorite lesson horse get sold? Some of us have, and some of us haven’t. If you have, you know how hard it is. The horse I used to ride got sold the day I went out there to ride him, and he was trailered out the same day, before I got there. I never got to even say goodbye. But there are ways to slowly let it go. I don’t mean to just forget about them completely, but to try and move on.

If your favorite horse is sold:

  • Talk to your trainer about maybe going to see him once every other month. If the horse is not too far away, you don’t have to be completely separated.
  • Start to ride other horses. Not just one, but many so you can get more advanced. Between all the horses you ride you will hopefully find another horse you love. Even though it is hard to try other horses and get attached because you’re scared they will get sold too, just take a chance. Everything happens for a reason.
  • Don’t think about quitting. Just remember that this is part of the horse world. You know that wherever he/she is they are probably happy. This is bound to happen once in your lifetime, if not more than once. As long as you know they are alive and happy it is easier to move on. I’m living proof. Bailey got sold and BAM! a month or two later Fletcher just walked right through the door.

If you know your favorite horse is being sold soon:

  • Take as many pictures as you can, that way you’ll never forget them.
  • Ride them as much as you can too. Try to make the last couple of days at his old home as happy as possible.
  • Remember life goes on, even when times are tough, everything works out!

I hope this blog will help you through a tough time.
