Loft Book Club Tip

Published by GHC • May 13th, 2007 • Category: Odds & Ends

For those of you who write chapter stories for the Loft Book Club, here’s a tip if you want to be eligible for the Judge for Yourself competition:

Finish the story.

That may seem obvious, be we notice many authors never cross the finish line, or maybe they’re finished and we just don’t know (it’s also OK if you get bored with writing the story and decide not to complete it). We’re always amazed and impressed when young authors have enough determination to finish a 20+ chapter story — even some adults don’t have that much tenacity. Go girls!

BTW I see this month’s competition has two stories in a tight race for first place. Good luck to everyone!

NOTE: No animals are hurt or abused in our competitions. :)

P.S. We’re working on fixing the problem with stories getting cut off. Our technology isn’t that old, but technology and cars have one thing in common — the more miles you put on them, the more likely they are to break down. Our web guru is taking a look at it this month. Thanks for your patience (especially Madelaina, who consistently has her stories cut off and always sends us the missing pieces in a separate submission).

  1. Sorry when my story Rocky Trails took so long!

  2. ponyprincess, taking time to write a story is fine, unless you have a deadline. :) even if it took you a while to finish, you still finished — that’s a good thing!

  3. Thanks!

  4. I’m gonna send a story called “Amber” soon if I finish it.

  5. When I tryed to submit my story I pressed submit and nothing happened…

  6. Marisa: If it’s reall long you have to submit it in parts. Try splitting the story in half and sending each part separately. The same thing happened to me.

  7. Good tip Julia. Also, there’s some info in the Frequently Asked Questions:

    http://www.girlshorseclub.com/barn/questions.html#book_club

We have someone who’s supposed to help upgrade the submission form this month so stories don’t get cut off. Thanks for your patience!

  8. I once had the same problem Marisa. I pressed Submit and nothing happened. But when a spam code was added I could start submitting my stories.

  9. I had the same problem 10,000,000 times! But when they added the spam blocker I could start submitting.

  10. ohhhh! I get it Julia! I’ll just send my story in parts! thanks!

  11. Ok, I sent my story and it worked! How long does it take for u guys to read the storys and judge wether to post it or not?

  12. Thanks for your submission Marisa. This info is from our FAQs:

How long will it take for my story to get posted?
It may take up to 24 to hours to post a story, sometimes longer on the weekends (we like to get out from behind the computer now and then). This is because we review each story to be sure it’s appropriate for girls of all ages, and edit to correct spelling or grammar. If it will take any longer or there’s a problem with your story, we will let you know.

  13. Please read Amber chapter 1, 2, and 3! Hope u like them!

  14. When u r finished reading them plz tell me how u like them and give me advice on how to make my stories better. (this is the first story i wrote on girlshorseclub.com)

  15. Great story :D Marisa,
It was done really well! There is one tip i have for a beginning author, I think you did it, write the whole story before you post it. It saves a lot of trouble, I submitted my story “Rocky Trails,” a little at a time and it took forever! i think the other way is better. Anyway, I like your story!!!

  16. I wrote the whole story on notebook paper and typed it on microsoft word and sent it bit by bit becuz it wouldn’t work if it was too long. Any way, thanks for telling me you liked my story! =)

  17. ponyprincess, i read your story rocky trails and i liked it a lot! u should submit more stories!

  18. Thanks Marisa!
I also have “The Golden Egg” and “Wild Stallion.” I am working on another story!
    Keep up the good work!

  19. Thanks! I’ll be sure to read your other stories! :)

  20. I read your storie and you r a great writer! the golden egg got 1st prize!

  21. Has anyone read my short story “Curious Colt”? It was my first try at a story. Thanks. :D

  22. Has anyone been reading “The Perfect Racer”? If you have, I will be sending in the next chapter soon.

  23. Hey Julia, I read Curios Colt and I loved it! You should deffinatly wright more stories!

  24. I agree Tori. You are very talented as a story-writer. Such good sentences and descripton.

  25. ponyprincess whats ur new story called? i doing another 1 called Funky Big Nose.

  26. yeah i totally agree with Tori and Madelaina, Julia you’re a born writer!(unlike me i can hardly spell) :)

  27. Animalsrkool: You’re not a bad speller! Besides, there’s a reason why there are writers *and* editors. Writers write, editors help with spelling and grammar. Our editors still expect writers to make an effort, but we know that even some of the greatest writers are not great at spelling.

BTW thanks for the great review of Black Beauty!

  28. your welcome,i enjoyed writing it.thanx for fixing anyspelling mistakes i did do.

  29. Thanx Madelaina!

  30. Thanks Tori. :D I’ll try to write more.

  31. No problem Julia!!!!

  32. OK, I saw this story in the loft called ‘America’s Loved Racehorses’ and I love it! Who else thinks so?

  33. Hey Madelaina, can we be friends?

  34. Hey ponyprincess, Your Story ‘Amber’ is awsome!! And it is in the ‘Judge for yourself’!! You really did a good job on it. Keep on writing!!

  35. I ment Marisa! Sorry for the mix-up!!
