Look at the Inside, Not the Outside

Many horse girls in the world want flashy chestnuts, or maybe a majestic black stallion. And many girls want a snow white horse with a beautiful flowing mane and tail.

But I’m here to say — look at the inside, not the outside.

You may see a dusty, dirty buckskin and go “I don’t want that horse!” But if you would take the time to look on the inside, you may find a loving horse just looking for a nice home.

You may want a stunning bay but all you can find are albinos and cremellos and say, “I don’t want those ugly horses.” Please don’t say that, for they are very good horses.

Don’t look into a field of horses for sale and pout when you don’t find the color you want. Look for a horse that has a good attitude and wants to have a good friend. Look for a good heart with room for love.

Please think about this when you go looking for your perfect horse — look at the inside, not the outside.

Author’s Note: Madelaina, if it weren’t for your poem Don’t Judge A Horse By Its Colour I would have never written this blog. Thanx again. :)

  1. Tori, nice 2nd blog! Keep up the good work! :)

  2. I agree! I know a horse that’s not the youngest and not the most beautiful horse in the world, but he’s so sweet!

  3. Tori this is really good,Well done!

  4. Great blog! I know what you mean to. At my couisens birthday party her mom drove us to a horse stable. She went in and automatically went to the black thoroughbred stallion. Her mother was a push over so naturally her daughter got him. But it was funny because everytime she got on him he wouldnt move at allXD

  5. Thanx! I love the pics! So sweet!

  6. Katlyn: Yah, you actually need to spend time with a horse/pony before you buy them to make sure it’s what you.

  7. We agree. It’s what’s on the inside that counts. A great book on this subject is called “A Good Horse Is Never a
Bad Color,” by Mark Rashid. The author talks about how the best horse he ever had wasn’t much to look at, sometimes you have to get to know a horse before you discover what gems they are.

  8. Ok, I’ll look for it in my local library!!

  9. I agree! My favorite horse of all time was exactly the most beautiful………..he was an old (really old 31 before he died) liver chesnut arabian gelding and his coat wasn’t as pretty or sleek or flashy as some of the other horses in the barn but he was always everyones favorite because he took even the youngest most inexperienced riders and made them fell like Olympians and he was so patient, calm and sweet!

  10. Sydney: Glad to hear!

  11. Wow Tori! Thanks that you put my poem into such consideration, I’m sure the rest of you guys have :) It’s good to know that other people share the same feelings as you. It’s personality that matters.

  12. I think its weird that most kids who get horses pick the most flashy, beautful one of them all. But some kids might really want a flashy horse. Like me for example. When I get my horse Im going to try and get a breed and coulour that I like. Lets face I hate the colour bay I just cant stand it!! And I do like chestnut and black and one of my fave breeds is the thoroughbred. So I would probabaly get a flashy chestnut *happy*

  13. Katlyn: I am happy you want a chestnut. It’s one of my personol favorites :). But remeber to look for a good heart with room for love and a best friend!!

  14. I don’t really care what a horse looks like, I just love the horse inside!

  15. Bay ia everywhere! theres 4 horses near me and 3 are bay! the others a chestnut(i like chestnuts) an there seems to be one visiting whos a blue roan, and theres one further away whos also blue roan, one of the bays is so sweet, whinnys when he sees me..

  16. Great blog Tori, luv the pics! How do ya add them?

  17. Cassie: I don’t, the kind people at GHC do!

    Horsjo: Glad to hear!

  18. I love horse no matter what. How could anyone be so crazy, not to llove all horses?

  19. Tori: I know. I would never run into a stable and buy the first flasy chestnut I see. I would ask for some info about the horse first. Then probabaly do a test ride.

  20. Katlyn: That is the best choice someone could make :)!

  21. Good Choice Katlyn! You are very smart!

  22. My mum says in a few years I can get a horse. There are a lot of horses on http://www.horsetopia.com and I can get one that in already trained, local, and the horse is well behaved. But I will also be sure to ride the horse and see if the horse has a good heart (all horses do but it is good to test!) After that if I loved riding the horses I can get him!

  23. I can’t get a horse because it costs so much to keep them. My grandma says it can cost $1,000 a month!

  24. Oh, there there. I am sure that she will get a lovely home, Katlyn.

  25. thats perfect… people also want purebed horses… i had my horse reba die and i wanted another pure arab just like her but the only one i could find at my friends (as a presesnt was hope and i did want her cus she was an arab… then i didn’t want her because i talked to a person and saw how special she was toher so i trained a cross breed ( i thought uggg) then i got her and saw her amazing friednly ness and said this iss the horse for me..

    now ruby’s nick name is

    RUBY THE MORAB MOUNTAIN MARE!!!!

  26. Chrissy: Great!

  27. Wow, I love this!Great job Tori! On the way home from town, I was thinking of writing a story like this?If you’re a member you get to write stories, right? If so, may I write a story on here based on this subject? How do you become a junior blogger?

  28. Ali, you can become a Jr. Blogger by having three blogs published. :) :)

  29. I’m glad you said this. I have a shirt that says “There is no bad color for a good horse.” No one believes that more than I do. I look for the conformation, and the personality. That’s how it should be.

  30. Ok, thanks. I’ll start writing in my notebook for ideas. So hard to come up with them, though. I do have a question though. If there’s already a blog on here and you have an idea for a bog, can it be anything like the already publsihed one?

  31. And where can/do you get the pictures for your blog at?

  32. Hi Ali, Please read the Casting Call for Bloggers for content guidelines and info about pictures.

We do like to publish a variety of content from a variety of authors. If you have something similar to another blog, it’s less likely to get published than something original.

    Hope this helps!

  33. OK Thank you! I’m already working on my first draft for my 2nd blog. If it gets published, then I’ll only need one more idea that is worthy of being published, and I’ll be a Jr. Blogger! My mouth literally fell open when I found my poem published! Did any of you like it?

  34. Ali, please note that having something published in the Loft Book Club is not the same as having something published in the blog. The bar is much higher in the blog.

*gently pulls the reins to steer this horse, er, blog back on topic*

We like to keep comments on topic to the blog, and this one has officially veered off topic. :) If you want to discuss stories/poems you’ve had published in the loft book club, here’s the place:

    http://www.girlshorseclub.com/wordpress/loft-book-club-authors-unite/2007/06/06/

Comments are now open on the Casting Call for Bloggers. If you have questions that are not already answered, feel free to ask over there.

    Thanks!

  35. But you know girls, sometimes the flashiest horse can be the friendliest horse. And to those of you thinking of test rides, good idea. I’ll telll you if it gets published, but I’m going to write a story about the day my best friend took me to her pastor’s house for a 4th of July party. So that’ll prove it’s a good idea to know about their temperament first.

  36. Ali: Yes, some times flashy horses are very well tempered. What I’m trying to say is, Don’t say “Oh I want that one!! Her coat is chestnut! My favorite!”And don’t say “I don’t want that one, its all dirty and its coat color is ugly.” DO you get it?

  37. Yes, I did get that, but was just saying that it is ok to want a flashy horse.

  38. Ali: Yes, it is ok. Its perfectly fine.

  39. Ali: Sorry I Haven’t answered. You can Definatly write a story on topic to my blog! I’d be more than happy! :)

  40. Okay!I will!
