Horses in WarfareHAPPY MEMORIAL DAY. Here in the U.S., the Memorial holiday remembers all who have died in military service. To anyone who has lost someone during wartime, you and your loved one are in our thoughts today.

At Girls Horse Club, we also remember the 4-legged soldiers. Since they were domesticated, horses have been used in the military for battle, scouting, transport, and more. If you’d like to learn something about the history of horses in war, check out the Wikipedia article Horses in Warfare.

Now for the news…

PUBLISHING CALENDAR. Thanks to all who contributed blogs, stories and poems during May. Everything in the publishing queue has been posted in the Loft Book Club and here in the blog. June submissions open on the 14th, so until then things will be quiet while some of you complete the school year and gear up for summer holidays. This works out well as I have fun activities planned the first half of June that will keep me busy, so comments will close for a bit starting Friday May 30th through June 8th. I’ll post a fun little puzzle game to challenge your brains during that time…

SUMMER FUN. You may have seen that dates are confirmed for another virtual visit from Terri Farley. She’ll arrive Saturday July 5th and will respond to comments and questions through the 11th. As many of you know, in addition to writing the Phantom Stallion books Terri is also a wild horse activist. I hope to learn more about her activities and how we can help. Stay tuned for details as we get closer to July…

WELCOME NEWBIES. As summer approaches, activity will increase and we’ll see (metaphorically speaking) some new faces. It’s great to hear from different voices, and great when old-timers step up to help newbies understand how things work around our (somewhat quirky) virtual barn. The ABOUT THE BLOG links at the top of the sidebar are always a good place to start, especially the GROUND RULES.

Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,

  1. Hey Leadmare! Yesterday night before I went to sleep I thought about how great it would be to post a blog about Memorial Day and to remember the soldiers and horses that have served our country. It is awesome that you posted a little something about it. (Cool that we both thought of the same thing!)

That will be awesome to have Terri Farley visit us! I also can’t wait to see all the fun activites that you are working on for us!

  2. That is cool Blaze’ncowgirl. Although Memorial Day is a US holiday, I’m also remembering the 2 and 4-legged soldiers in parts of the world where our GHC sisters live. War is an unfortunate reality and those who willingly go into service are incredibly brave. And the horses (who don’t actually ‘volunteer’ for battle) are also heroes. I don’t know about you, but most of the horses I know are not that brave… ;)

Enjoy the holiday with your family and friends.

  3. Thank you for mentioning Memorial Day, Leadmare!
It’s an extra important day for me and my family because my Dad is in the Air Force. And, I’m friends with a lot of people who are in the military.
He’s been to war six times, and just came back from a deployment recently.
I’m gproud to have a hard working, wonderful Airman in my house, and even prouder to have him as my father, even if we aren’t related by blood.
Love you Dad, Jim, Stacy, West, and all the rest of the soldiers, airmen[and women], and Navymen.
[Also, happy Birthday Dad! I'm sure that you SO enjoy that your birthday is the day before mine. ;)]

  4. Hi people! I can’t wait till Terry comes!!! Once I send her a letter about the making of the phantom movie!

  5. To LeadMare: Wow! A lot is going on on GHC! Thank you for the updates on Terri’s visit, blog comments, and the reminder of Memorial Holiday. I hope that everyone doesn’t have a normal day, and thinks about all those who have served the military in the past and present. Hopefully we’ll all have a great week, and we’ll have time to go and visit GHC.

To Halee: Read your post. That’s pretty cool (in a way) that your dad serves in the Air Force. Make this day special for him!

    Have a Happy Memorial Day!

  6. Australia has something similar to the US’s Memorial Day, and it is always great to remember and respect the soldiers, definitely including the horses! June is going to be a very exciting month, and I just can’t wait. All the things planned sounds fantastic. Until then, everybody have a great time celebrating Memorial Day!

  7. Hope everyone had a fantastic Memorial Day yesterday, or just a fantastic day if you don’t live in the US.

To Madelaina: How far have you gotten on reading all the loft book club stories?

To LeadMare: Thanks for keeping us up to date on all this stuff! You are amazing at knowing what we want to do! I can’t wait to see Terii Farley. Thanks for setting that up! Well, I’ve gotta get to school now! See Ya Later!
