Memories of Horses We Love

I personally have never owned a horse but I have been talking to a few friends who have and asked them to tell me a little about them. Here is some of what they said.
“I remember the transition from pony to horse. It was always hard saying goodbye to the lovable creatures that were SMALL and easy, but getting a horse was SO exciting! I was in the big time now; no going back. A horse I could ride all day and still know he had energy left to steal my ball cap or throw hay at me. I remember coming in the house with a clump of hay and horse spit in my hair before dinner. My mom wasn’t too happy but dad always thought it was the funniest thing. The best memory I ever had with my horse Cinnamon was when I accidentally left my hat in his stall and he HID it! It took me four days to find it at the bottom of his water trough! I couldn’t stay mad because he touched his nose to my chin and his eyes laughed at me. ‘Lighten up!’ he said and if a horse could grin that was what he was doing!”
This was a memory from my best friend’s Aunt Cathy. She has a whole bunch of pictures of her horse Cinnamon and in almost every one he is stealing her hat!
Another memory, from my Uncle Bill, was about a horse he rescued when he was 35.
“Yeah, I always rescued horses. Old, young, mare, stallion, any kind of horse that needed me. I’d fix em up till they were the perfect image of health then find them a good home with plenty of kids or with just a few people. Depends on their personality. But I’ll never forget the 9 month foal I rescued from a circus. The circus was being shut down for cruelty to animals and sure enough the foal was terrified of humans.
Took a long time to get ‘em used to me and comfortable enough to try being funny. That was JUST the beginning. I would find him all over the pasture and sometimes he took my grooming brushes and hid them! I never knew how he got to them in the first place; I kept them in a small room that would be considered an office, in a bucket, on a shelf that he shouldn’t be able to reach. So one day I watched him and I saw him actually open the stall door! Right in front of my eyes he lipped the latch up and off, pranced out of the stall like he owned the world and trotted right into my ‘office’! I couldn’t believe it. He didn’t know I was watching so he jumped up at the shelf, managed to knock the bucket down and nosed through it until he found the brush he wanted. Then he pranced right back to his stall, closed the door and buried the brush in his bedding. I was sure he’d take it to the pasture later. I went into the stall, dug up the brush, and took it away while scolding him. I had to double lock it from then on and he wasn’t too happy about it. That was one horse I never found a home for. I could have found plenty of homes but none would have been as perfect as the one he already had. So I kept him and trained him and one day he was the finest horse I had ever seen.”
Horses can be funny, smart, cute, and loving. They KNOW how to cheer you up, that’s for sure, and they are always ready to make you smile. The best horses are the ones that make a lasting impression on you; the ones who know enough about your character to realize exactly what funny little antic will make the stress melt off. Hopefully one day everyone who loves horses will find a special one just for them; one that knows how to have fun!
