More Than Just a Pretty Face

I’ve noticed that many girls spend hours just dreaming of the perfect horse. One of my close friends (who shall remain unnamed) often dreams of owning a leggy Thoroughbred stallion, black of course, who races faster than anyone else. This no name friend tells me how she will ride and own him. I often just shake my head and laugh a little under my breath. Of course there is nothing at all wrong with dreams, other than you can’t ride and own a race horse because a jockey cannot afford to own the horse they ride. Also, has anyone even thought of the fact that not all horses are leggy Thoroughbred stallions? Or delicate Arabian fillies? Or majestic Friesians? Or history rich Gypsy Vanners? Of course it’s alright to dream about them, but how many of us will actually come to own them? A few. Many of us will settle with trusty Quarter Horses. Some with plain but wonderful mustangs. Many end up with mutts.
Where am I going with this? Well, I have to admit this blog does hold some anger in it, because I am kind of disgusted at how many of us (horse girls, that is) cannot remember that we do not love horses for flashy gaits and shining coats.
We love horses for the feeling of safety atop their backs. We love them for the quiet moments spent alone in complete truth. We love them because they fly alongside us. We love them because they are our dreams wrapped up in a package, the best isn’t the wrapping, it’s the heart inside. We love them because they are our worlds, our everything, our reason for taking another step when we are down. I don’t know about you, but being around horses puts my life in order, makes me smile when others are frowning, makes me happy when others are sad. And out of all the others, all I can pay attention to is me and my faithful mount, and the mutual feeling we hold between us, glue holding us into one team.
What I’m trying to say here is that there is life outside of the world of flashy Warmbloods and leggy Thoroughbreds. I’m trying to say that we should know there are other horses out there besides them. Don’t forget, I’m only acussing those who have done this, not those who have done this but now have come to the realization that there are others. But really, truly think about it. When you are writing something about horses (if you are a writer) your passionate words aren’t all about their beauty, are they? And if you dream about horses, do you only dream of their looks? Do you not dream of them riding with you under the moonlight? Guys, fantasy horses are okay to dream about, but there are others.

Writing this, I remember the powerful story about the same subject by a fellow horse girl and Junior Blogger Syd. The story is called Remember the Others. Honestly, there are others you should think about. Or at least think about WHY you love horses. Of course you love them because they are beautiful, but after a while we begin to see all horses as beautiful, and that is a great thing. I’m not saying it’s bad to marvel in the beauty of the equine, because true beauty is really in them, but remember that there is more than looks. We can find beauty in the quiet moments alone, the long rides, and the countless hours spent immersed in the wonderful, weird world of horses.

Wow! You’ve done it again Halee! I love this blog. Your completely right! I addmit, when I dream of horses the horse is usually beautiful and purebreed, but I love horses that might not be considered beautiful by other people. My horse Fella, as many of you know passed away almost two years ago. He wasn’t the strongest stallion, and he was shaggy and old, but he still is the horse I dream of most. I love him with all my heart! So although I can be acccused of dreaming of beautiful horses, the thing you can accuse me more of is loving horses for what they are, not for what the price tag on the horse says. Sorrry to preach a sermon on your blog Halee, but this really inspired me! :D
this is an awesome blog!
I can’t believe a 12-year-old wrote this! I like how you DIDN’T use fancy words, I liked how you shared your feelings with us. And you are perfectly right, this blog explains the main thing horse girls need to know. I would just like to thank you, Halee, for letting us know the immportance of liking horses. I think this blog is wonderful! ;)
I thank you guys once again for the great feedback, this virtual barn is so full of warm hearted people, thank you again, veyr much.
I loved it and your right! I had a virtual horse site once (deleted now) and I had a mixed breed pony and I used the picture of the gorgeous pony I ride. My friend who also rode with me made a black arabian filly and put a pic from the web of a really beautiful horse. I was annoyed that she did this, and she’s a lot smaller than me!!
Oh wow Halee this is beyond brilliant! I love this blog so much! You’ve shown me something very important for horse girls to remember and I would never forget it. I don’t dream about a dream horse, because there are so many out there, shaggy and showy, that I can’t decide. But I’m hoping to know, when the time’s right, that I’ve chosen the right one. Thank you very much and keep up the great work! You definitely deserve a place as Junior Blogger!
This blog is awesome! I agree 100 percent.
As a little girl, I always loved horses. But what I knew of horses was white ponies ridden by princesses and huge black stallions that won many races. It wasn’t until I started lesssons that I saw the horses that weren’t featured in fairy tales or movies. I learned how to ride on a brown crossbred pony called Danny. He was scorned by people who we met at shows and put down by riders on tall thoroughbreds and even I was criticized for riding him. But I didn’t care, because Danny was the world to me.
Once again, LeadMare, PLEASE save a spot on the JB List for Halee! This is an awsome blog….great job Halee!
