My Best Friend

Published by hooteeny • Aug 24th, 2007 • Category: Guest Bloggers

as your virtual barn dog, i try to keep a low profile. what’s the point of crashing this blog to compete for your attention when you’re really here to read about horses? but i do read your blogs and stories, and i learn a lot from you. besides all the horse stuff, one thing i’ve learned is when you’re feeling scared, sad, or anxious, sometimes it helps to write about it. so forgive my interruption, but…

i’m feeling sad. very sad.

as some of you know, my best four-legged friend jackson got bone cancer. his right rear leg was amputated with the hope it would get rid of the cancer. well 8 months passed and my three-legged friend was doing really well, then a few weeks ago the cancer came back in another leg. jackson was starting to have trouble walking. then tragically, he fell down some stairs. he was hurt and suffering. with much sadness, his loving family made the difficult decision to end his pain. so two weeks ago today, i said goodbye to my best friend.

for those of you who have lost your best animal friend, i understand how you feel. sad. very sad. to help my sadness, here is a little tribute…

wag-wag to my best friend jackson.

jackson1.gif

thank you for helping me learn that big dogs aren’t so scary. thanks for making everyone smile with your silly sense of humor.

jackson2.gif

thank you for teaching me to taunt the neighborhood dogs who are stuck in their yard while we’re out playing in the street. thank you for showing me the good places to sniff (and pee) on our walks.

jackson31.gif

thanks for sharing treats with me, and for not eating my cat BOO. thanks for showing me that a three-legged dog can run, play, hike, and do just about anything a four-legged dog can do.

jackson6.gif

but most of all, thank you for the unconditional love and generous affection you gave to so many.

jackson4.gif

you will always be with me in spirit.

Thank you for allowing me to crash your blog for this tribute. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming…

love your virtual barn dog, hooteeny

  4. Marisa is right. His O:-) will be always there. And you will always have your best friend.

My cat fell down some stairs, had a deadly cat sickness, fell off of a tree, and was attacked by a rat. I miss him so much. He was Buster.

R.I.P. to Buster and Jackson, great animals who still live on in the heavens.

Anyway, I don’t mind at all that you interrupted. Your blogs are all so great. If you submit one more, you will be the first dog Jr. Blogger.

  8. I see that Jackson was almost 11. I am 11. How old are you? My cat who died was 18. I know he had a good life but it is still so sad when a friend goes.

The only pets that I’ve lost were a hamster who I loved to death,Twinky.A whole bunch of fish [who hasn't?] and four hermit crabs.I may not be able to match your greaf but I still feel for you.Good Luck!

  16. Rember Hooteeny all the good times you had together, and give yourself some time. :) You publish blogs whenever you like, i love your blogs!

  17. I’m really sorry about Jackson, Hoteeny. When I read this, I thought of my past two dogs, Bear, a Golden Retriever who got hit by a car, so then he had one of his legs amputated, and died of illness. Then I had Katie, well, she was my mom’s dog because my mom got her from her job at Petland at a reduced price. Katie was a papillon who eventually went deaf, started to go blind, fell down the stairs all the time, and she couldn’t use the bathroom except to do # 1, and threw up all her food. My mom had her her down maybe 2-4 years ago, so Katie lived until 16. My mom was starting to say she thought it was the wrong choice a few months ago, but I told her it wasn’t. Hey Hoteeny!Maybe Jackson,Bear, Katie, and my Grandpa’s unnamed paint filly who died because her mom couldn’t feed her, are together in animal heaven playing right now!

  18. Oops. I meant mom had Katie put down 2-4 years ago. I just now saw Jackson’s death date, It’s on the same day as my sister’s birthday.

  19. I’ve also lost a hamster and a hermit crab, too. And maybe about 3 fish.

  20. One of my other cats was hit by a car even worse than Buster and she died.

  21. Hooteeny, remember to get us posted on how he is doing, since I believe he is in your heart and is always there for you.

  22. Also, I wrote a poem for you:

    A Best Friend’s Pledge

    If Jackson was sad,
    You’d be there for him,
    If you were sad,
    Then Jackson will comfort you.

    If Jackson was happy,
    You will bark and play,
    If you were excited,
    He proves it’s contagious.

    If Jackson was scared,
You would fight by his side,
    If you were hurt,
    He would lick your wounds.

    If you were harmed,
    Jackson will protect you,
And now that he is gone,
    It is your turn.

    If wishes were true,
And prays had gone to use,
And shed tears are from love,
    and whines are goodbyes,
Then Jackson is in your heart,
    And you are in his.

    Hope you like it!

  23. wag-wag everyone. thanks so much for your thoughtfulness. i don’t give hugs very well because i’m a dog, but i’m the world’s be cuddler. i wish i could travel across the internet to share my special doggie affection as a way of saying thanks to each of you.

thank you madelaina for the beautiful poem. your words have captured the spirit of my friendship with jackson. how did you know?

i hope all your lost pets enjoy knowing jackson. even though it’s hard to be without loved ones who have passed, it’s a good reminder to enjoy every second with the special animals and people in our lives right now.

  24. Thats lovely Hooteeny {:D} and worth remembering, i’ll remember that always.

  25. You’re welcome Hooteeny, I can understand how it is to loose a family member. I sort of felt the same when I had to move houses and had to leave all my good friends behind.

  26. Dearest Hooteeny,
I can relate to how you feel. Almost all of you know that my horse, Fella, is gone from me. Many of my poems are inspired by that. But Hooteeny, remember that Jackson is happier now, though he must be missing you! :)
