One Last Goodbye

In your eyes pain lies there,
you’ve given up, you no longer care.
What brought you to this dreadful place?
Where you no longer fight for your fearful case?
Every inch of you is nearly gone,
you’ve been absent for much too long.
Happiness and joy are no longer here,
instead your eyes hold a terrible fear.
Dull and gone, where is that spark?
Do you feel you’ve already made your mark?
You can’t leave, no, not now!
I can’t see you gone, I don’t see how.
The best of friends, its always been you and me.
As long as I remember, in morning you I’d see.
How can I leave these joyful memories behind?
I wish we could go back, yes, lets rewind.
That first morning, I saw you standing there.
Among all the horses I saw you, the gorgeous buckskin mare.
I had been just a girl then,
a long time ago but I remember when.
Our first ride, it was just like magic.
I remember our last, oh why so tragic?
We had a connection, oh so powerful and strong.
We always stood together, I can’t believe we’re saying so long.
Everyone was baffled by our friendship and your strength.
We thought for sure this would go on for a powerful length.
We rode together, almost just like one.
Oh, joy! These memories, they’re powerful fun.
I wish we could go on like these memories, just like this.
Oh girl, but you’re slipping, oh how much you I’ll miss.
The light in your eyes is slipping by.
Farewell so soon, I wonder why.
I pray so hard you’ll stay, as the tears come marching in.
You have to stay, but I know in the end death will always win.
Now we say goodbye, my beautiful girl.
“Forever,” I say as I tuck in a stray curl.
The breath of death came by surprise.
I hold my breath, willing to stop the cries.
Oh my beautiful girl, forever friends we’ll stay.
We’ll stay forever riding into the sun, even when you’ve passed away.
Everyone was baffled by our friendship and your strength,
we thought for sure this would go on for a powerful length.
But now we say goodbye.
And I sit here, wondering why.

sigh… loses are so hard to deal with. Joannah you perfectly describe the feeling and emotions that well up inside us when one of our loved ones passes on. But the bond never breaks. =0) Like a chain we will be linked to them for eternity.

That reminded me of my relationship with Titian. It’ll last forever. Thank you for writing this, Jonannah. It eases the pain of losing my great stallion. I once whispered that to him, too. “Forever, my great boy,” I said to him, while we were sitting in the barn waiting for my parents or the vet or someone to come help us tend to his injuries. Thanks again for writing this; it feels as if someone took the burden off my shoulders.

I am so happy with this poem :-) And I’m glad it is published. Thanks girls! Wild’n'free when I heard about your horse I wasn’t much comfort. But I was happy when I saw my poem was published and I hope it was a comfort to you.
Wow, Jonannah, that was a powerful poem. That is just. . .amazing. That was mesmerizing! Great job! Keep it up!
Beautiful poem, I loved every line! Reminds me of when Ginger died in Black Beauty. It’s soo sad when people lose animals they love.
“sigh” My sis was on here again. That yllek was actually me. So sorry. Great job again Jonannah!
This is one of the best poems I have ever read. I loved every line of it. There’s always that question of “why” when someone you love dearly passes on. Sometimes the answer is impossible to find, just like the rest of life. Beautiful writing, Jonannah, you’ve captured the emotions perfectly.
:( so sad, i wish horses could live our lives through with us, but in a way they do, we dont allow them to die, in our hearts
Beautiful work, yet so sad. I wish horse gould be with us allways. “sigh”
Great poem and yet so it’s so sad-bittersweet! ;)
Oh my goodness Joannah! That is amazing! You are such a great writer! I know you will become an author someday, God willing! Your story and your poem are very moving and special! Great job! I’m sure God is up there looking down and thinking wow! Great job, really I mean it!
