Barren Land

Painting and Poem by HorseFeathers, age 17

This land is barren now silent,
Stiller than death itself

The earth once trembled with thundering hooves
And the hills echoed with their song

The desert lark cries out
But she receives only the answer of the wind

Where the young foals used to play
Sand smooths away any evidence of their existence

I stand in this place listening
Only to my thoughts

“What have we done?”
I cry more than question

The last of the wild ones have vanished
No, they have been stolen

My children’s children will
Remember them as only a fairy tale

The land is barren now
And it weeps in silence.

  1. WOW, horsefeathers!. That was ama-za-zing!!!! I loved it! It was so moving. It made me all depressed. It’s so so good! And I LOVE the painting. An obvious show of some of your talent. :0)

  2. …….*crying* so moving and powerful and so very sad! So lonely and baren and..just so sad.

  3. This is so sad- I hope it doesn’t ever play out! My heart sunk just reading it.

  4. HF, the feeling in this poem was so real and heartfelt. The painting was good too, it perfectly conveys the sadness and lifelessness of the range. The poem was so sad, but it’s REAL. You have a great way with emotions, and even though the poem has substance, it’s not too heavy. It will stay with me though. Great job!!

  5. Oh, my gosh. That is TOUCHING! It makes me partially angry @ BLM. I’m only partially angry because THEY’RE ONLY DOING THEIR JOB. I mean, it IS mean, selfish, and unkind to take our heritage away from us, and destroy them. More horses have died due to roundups than ever would in the wild naturally. This HAS to stop, before all of them are gone, as described in you poem. We HAVE to fight for them, before we do, indeed, “remember them as only a fairy tale”. Save the wild horses. Stop wild horse roundups BEFORE it gets out of control.

  6. Wow awesome job, HF! :) I find the poem deep yet powerful. I love it :D

  7. That poem really makes us think about what we’re doing. It’s very powerful, and you’ve got all the emotions perfectly. Wonderful job once again!

  8. That is so moving and deep-I hope that doesn’t ever happen, like Rochlia says! I loved it! :)

  9. Thanks gals. I wrote this poem in a mindset as to what the reality might possibly be if it were decided to take all the wild horses off the range. Sort of a barren womb unable to give life, metaphor compared to what the land would be without our equine.

    thanks again

  10. Hey LeadMare, when is more of the publishing calendar going to be filled up? Just wondering.

  11. Husky: I believe that near the end of each week Leadmare might be filling up the following week. At least that appears to be what she’s doing. No worries it’ll get here soon enough. ;)

  16. “The land is barren now and it weeps in silence.” The west will truly never be complete without wild horses. Never.
