Partnership

The most important thing to remember is that you’re one half of a partnership. Your horse is not a machine; He’ll have his good and bad days, just like you. It’s important that he can put trust in you and your judgement. So you can work together even when things aren’t going your way.

~~from Chestnut Hill (All Or Nothing), by Lauren Brooke

partnership.gifWords of wisdom. It’s very easy to think your horse knows what to do and that you can just sit there. It’s possible you think your horse can read your mind (although that’s very unlikely) and you’re annoyed when he doesn’t trot when you’re thinking about it. Remember that you are one half, your horse being the other. Your horse does what you ask and you help.

Your horse is not a mind reader. Horses pick up on our feelings. If you’re nervous he’ll probably be too. That big hedge, which was his best friend yesterday, wants to eat him today. If you’re happy and confident, then your horse will pick up on it and be happy and confident as well (that hedge is his friend again!).

Don’t be lazy, and be focused! If you’re thinking about school, what was on TV last night, etc., then your horse isn’t going to trot. Shorten your reins, stop slouching, focus, and start riding!

Your horse needs to be able to rely on you. He should know you’ll always be there for him, to care for him and share some happy moments. Make it so he can rely on you and you’ll be best friends, like you should.

(P.S Please tell me what you think of this blog as it’s my first.)
