Prarie Song

Published by GHC • Aug 9th, 2009 • Category: Poetry, by HorseFeathers

by HorseFeathers, age 16

Upon a broken field
stands my little wooden cabin
beneath the willow tree

Every night is crystal clear
gentle winds playing with my chimes
The crickets perform at my door

But of it all, oh of it all
the white horseman
stands for all

He comes every evening
when the sun sets to rest
with his guitar, and his riding
upon the white steed

He sings to me every night
One song by moon’s light

“Kansas, sweet Kansas land divine
Like the earth and the sky our love binds”

Never does it ring old
or do I tire at his voice

For when I hear the trit and trot
of his majestic horse
I light a candle on the sill
and listen with delight

  1. There’s a certain mystery to this poem. I can picture perfectly the serene night with that mesmerising trot, the voice of the horseman and that one candle on the sill. Very calming and beautiful writing, almost like a lullaby. Fabulous job HorseFeathers! Absolutely fabulous.

  2. That is amazing! Everything so perfectly described.

  3. Agreed with Madelaina. I could see the picture in my head, and for some strange reason it reminded me of the book Little House on the Prairie :)
