Re-homing Horses

After a horse has been rehabilitated at a rescue centre, if they are healthy enough, they can be re-homed as riding or companion horses. Most of these horses will have a few problems if they have had been mistreated, but you can still find a great horse in need of a loving home. This gives the sanctuary space to help more horses in need, too!

When the horse has been checked that it is healthy and ready to be re-homed, you can go to the centre, phone them or visit their web site and they will be happy to help you find your perfect horse.

After having a bad past, the horse will need a very good home with experienced people, so the rescue centre will check your horse knowledge, your stables and paddocks, and how long you will be willing to keep the horse.

When you find a horse, you have to take a riding test if the horse will be ridden. This will usually be in an arena, then a paddock, on the road and cross country riding. Then they will visit your home, or wherever you will be keeping the horse, to make sure it’s safe and the right place for that horse. For example, a nervous horse who is scared of loud noises wouldn’t be very happy at a large yard, whereas a friendly horse who has been at a show jumping or dressage yard won’t be happy on his own in your back garden.

If everything goes well, you will be able to take the horse on loan. The horse will always belong to the sanctaury, so they will be able to take him or her back if you  mistreat them. A welfare officer will check the horse about every six months, to make sure they are healthy and well cared for. They can also give you advice about the horse if you need it.

Every horse is special, and they deserve a second chance. Will you give a horse their second chance in a loving new home?

  1. Excellent writing on your behalf, Sweetie! I hope this blog has touched someone’s heart and convinced them to offer a homeless horse a loving family. That’s one of my goals in the future to rescue a horse. Until then, I’ve got a lot of work to do. There’s just so much to do and so much to learn.

  2. Great blog Sweetie. I will look into these horses when I get a horse. :)

  3. Now, maybe I could show this to my parents… Do you think that would convince them? Maybe so.. Anyways, I really loved the blog. Keep up the super fantastic work!!!

  4. Thanks for the info! I wondered how all that worked. Very interesting!:)

  5. Great blog sweetie! In fact, I think you SHOULD show it to your parents mustangmane. I’ve got an idea for you. Maybe you should look up horses that need new homes, and then send your parents an email with pictures of horses that need homes and a copy of sweetie’s blog. I know some kids that this kind of thing worked out for. And one of the things that made my mom want to get me a horse was learning about the fate of horses that can’t find good homes. A convincing blog Sweetie, and I loved the closing!
