Slaughter

I see the hate in your eyes
when you look at me
the gray burns and shines
And green is all you see.
I am a loyal horse
And good and smart
If you’d ask kindly
I’d do my part.
But all you see is green
Money is your only care
So you’d gladly slaughter me
Even though I’d take you ANYWHERE!
I’d let you ride me all day
You could race me too
I’d jump over everything
I’d do it all for you!
But all you see is green
And it is your only care
I could prance around in my beauty
or shake my silky hair.
But you don’t see my beauty
You don’t even see my heart
All the kindness I offer to you
And yet you can’t be smart!
Green and gold and copper
Is all that your eyes behold
I could be your best friend
But you care for only what is sold.
So you kill me without care
And though my cries fill your ears
Green is all that you understand
So we die in all our fears.
Why slaughter our friendship?
Why turn your back on our love?
Why are you so mean?
Why do you only see green?

So-o good. I was practically crying. Awesome job!
Excellent poem Violet! I think a great title for this would be “Seeing Green”. I cry when i hear updates about the BLM and slaugther houses ending more lives year after year. It makes me sick… I fear that if not enough people do someting about it.. the wild horse will be nothing but an imagination of the past. Good on ya for writing this poem!

I almost cried reading that. That is such an evil owner! As far as I’m concerned, horses are worth far more then any money. They are priceless. And thinking that some girls dream is being killed at this moment is horrible. To think that Marley might have ended up like that… I’m so sickened by this people! They don’t deserve to get near any animal as loyal, trusting and loving as a horse!
I’m so angry now…
I am glad this poem touched your hearts. I wish we could send it to people that do the slaughtering!
Oh, what a poem! It makes me agitated at the world for it what it has become. I adopted my little horse last year and SHE was rescued from slaughter, that could be her right now, and another thing… I am in love with that horse..
Hi, I am new here. I have been reading for a while but I never really knew what to comment, so, here you go! I will try and post on here more often.
your words are beautiful!
some people dont ust get it.(i’m glad WE are not them!)
People are so not smart! I think greed is out of control. That was a very good poem, Vi, eye-opening. I can’t believe someone would kill a horse for MONEY. Money is just a thing. I agree with HorseFeathers, it makes me sick too. I couldn’t bear it if wild horses were no more. I’d die.
Diana is right, i think they have shut down slaghter houses though. to imagine Pal in any place lie that…it would kill me. horses are amazing, smart, loving, and gracful. why destory one?
Sad, but beautiful. I love your poems and stories VI. What is wrong with the person who “sees green”! I’d give any amount of money for a horse of my own! Your poem also reminds me of an update I read about wild horses. Someone wanted to slaughter them, but they couldn’t find anyone to do the job, lol!
Great poem! The mean owner in it kind of reminds me of one of my characters in the story I wrote, this Spanish guy named Juan Rafael. (not a real person though as far as I know just a figment of my imagination!)
I DID cry. My old horse, Halo, whom we bought at an auction, could have gone to slaughter, as the result of someone only ‘seeing green’ or who could not take care of her. at least we bought her before that could happen. Now she’s long gone, but i still have a special place in my heart for horses that went to or almost went to slaughter.
Just reading the pain of a horse going through something so terrible tore my heart out. It’s so unfair how millions of horse girls would die for a horse, yet those who don’t even care about them have the ability to end their lives. Those people don’t deserve the wonders of horses, or any other animal for that matter. They should try living in the shoes of horses, but then it’ll be impossible to be as horrible as they are.
Excellent poem, Violet! It’s very evoking, I think everyone should read it.
People see horses as cows of chickens. Creatures to be slaughtered by the dozen! And if that isn’t bad enough they are C.R.U.E.L when they do it! Imagen being killed in a very painful way when it didn’t have to be like that!
I am so touched by your poem!
