The Horrors of the Horse World
Published by GHC • Mar 20th, 2009 • Category: Poetryby Stargazer, age 12
Two stallions fight a bloody battle
Over a mare in heat
Sometimes a fight to the death
All for the amusement of people
A horse abandoned
Longs for death
To cease his pain
He can’t wait for his last breath
Several horses
Eyes wide with fear
Forced to race down steep slopes
They sense death is near
A thoroughbred horse
Races around a track
Loaded up with drugs
With every step death is closer
A horse unwanted
Hears the screams before him
He knows he is next
He waits for death to claim his life
The horses we love
Are being tortured
But what can we do?
There are so many problems
Don’t waste your time crying
Despairing or whining
Do something about it
Use your talents to save these horses that are dying
These horses can’t do it alone
So we must step in
And do all we can
These horrors of the horse world must come to an end

I agree with many points in your poem. We can’t stand around whining we need to do something about the bloody matter already.. But race horses aren’t always drugged… they are bred to race it is their life and their love to run. In the wild, stallions fight for dominance… they can’t talk it over, so the stronger one claims the female.. its the way it goes. As for amusement.. a person has to be pretty low to find that funny. Otherwise i really appreciate your poem stargazer. Champion job

That is so true! I love how you pointed out many different ways horses are abused… but horses fighting in the wild is part of their life. You are a great poet!

You did a great job, and I do agree with HorseFeathers, that thoroughbreds aren’t always on drugs, but those trainers who do drug their horses should go to jail, and a good many of them do. I just can’t believe some people would do these things to a horse. I could never hurt any animal. The look in a trusting horse’s eye. . .Nope.
Horsefeathers and Allison,
I’m not referring to the horses fighting in the wild. I’m referring to the horse fights people in some countries have for amusement. They bring stallions into a small space and also a mare in heat. Often, the stallions don’t fight, so the people provoke them with whips and gunshots fired up in the air. This is not what I call fighting in the wild.
Also, many of the horses on the racetrack are not given illegal drugs, but drugs that are legal that temporarily “fix” the problem so they can race. But really, should a horse be racing if he is not healthy? This only makes their life shorter.
100% true. WE– OUR GENERATION, should make a difference.
A truly powerful poem, Stargazer.

I’m going to say that I agree with HorseFeathers. great poem, though!
It’s an unfortunate fact that some race horses are drugged. But we can make a difference!
Stargazer…
that’s interesting, i did not know that people had fighting rings for horses. Ive heard of Cock and dog fights but never horse fights. That should definatly be stopped. It happens in the wild though and thats the only way it should happen.
What kind of drugs do they give the horse? Like a temper control or something? I know that if a horse is injured they are disqualified.

I have heard a horse scream one too many times. It is heart wrenching. Thankfully the horse tht screamed lived. Keep up the good writing. :)
I once saw a horse beaten to death online, and I HAVE to saw. THINGS NEED TO CHANGE for horses here in america, and ALL over the world. Great job Stargazer, great poam!
Horsefeathers, there’s so many different ways that horse’s are drugged on the racetrack. I think it would be best if I wrote a blog about it.
Oh Stargazer, your poem gave me chills, and brought tears to my eyes. I could imagine I was the horse, drugged, abused, or waiting for death. But then you said don’t waste your time crying. You’re right. We can’t just do nothing! This poem was very powerful, and I hope you’ll keep writing powerful poems, not just for GHC sisters to read, but for the rest of the world to read!
