The Importance of a Name

We’ve all probably done it. “What was your name again?” you ask, recognizing the face, but not the name. Sometimes, the name is more memorable than the face. Say there’s a bay horse, average size, no special markings, and he looks just like a normal horse. But his name — Zanzibar — is so unforgettable, you never forget him. Names can be the making of personalities. The Indians often were given different names as they grew older, for something they did that might have saved someone or something. Something unforgettable.

Almost everybody on GHC has a special name they go by, their pen name. This isn’t a name you go by regularly, its more of a special nickname someone may have given you, or something you made up yourself. My pen name comes from the horses, mustangs, and also from the car. I love ‘em!

Some of the Indians with horses gave their personal horses a special name only the Indian and the horse knew. It was special, between them and them alone. It could be the only thing uniting the Indian and his horse.

Names really are special. There may be other people with your name, or you may be the only one with that name, but it’s not the meaning of the name — it’s what YOU make the name mean.

  1. I won’t say my real name here but i will tell you it means lamb… =0) My dad used to have them on his little farm as a boy. One time my grandmum had to bring a lamb inside during the winter cause it was too cold. As for my pen name.. HorseFeathers.. its a term i sometimes say when im frustrated or excited. Oh and one of my grandfathers is cherokee so i thought it would be neat to have HorseFeathers as a pen name. Champion Job!

  2. I heard a story where someone had a cow that calfed in the winter and they found the calf half frozen. They warmed it up and the next day it’s ears and tail chipped off from being frozen! It’s still alive too! And they had a chicken named PEG cause his foot froze and broke off so he hopped around on ONE foot!

Anyway, I’m VioletInkpen because Violet is my middle name, named after someone important in our family, and Inkpen described my love for writing!

  3. Salina is just a name that came to me and it stuck. Not very interesting, huh.;) I might change it some time soon….
Hey, HorseFeathers, did you by any chance read the Horse Feather books? (I can’t remember the author right now) I read them and was wondering if you had gotten your name from there;)

  4. Champion Job, once again, Mustang23. I won’t tell you my real name but it’s after the angel Gabriel from the bible. And my pen name…it’s because I am wild, and I like to ride my horse out in the open, where no one can catch us, just him and I…hrmmm…..

  14. My fave horse names are Caspian and Flame! Here is a lil’ bit about my dream horses:
Flame- He’s a huge black stallion with a heart of “fire”. He is courageous, and leads his herd with fairness and equality.
Caspian- He’s a big black Andalusian. He’s named after Narnia’s Prince Caspian. Caspian (the horse) is courageous, faithful, and passionate. But if you mess with him, he will not hesitate to rear, and go wild.

  15. My name means truthful! My parents just liked that name. Nothing too special about it. Thanks for the compliment, mustang23! I love your pen name! Why did you put “23″ after mustang in your pen name? Just curious.

  16. Very creative blog mustange23! My pen name is because of my horse Blaze…and I’m her cowgirl. =)It also reminds me of a cowgirl making a trail or riding fast. I also like the sound. lol I guess like my horse and me it is as if Blaze and I are both doing this together. If not for her I wouldn’t have as much stuff to write about or as many memories that come to mind as I read others blogs. (I hope I will be able to write and contribute more once school winds down.)

    P.S. I love everyone’s pen/nicknames!

  17. Hey, Narnian Rose! I haven’t “seen” you around the barn in a while! Glad you’re back. Allison, I put the 23 there for Michael Jordan. JK! Actually, I put it there because I was born on the 23rd of January.

  18. No kiddin Mustang23? I was born Jan 24th! =0)
