It was dark when I came out to feed the horses. I was close to tears and thinking hard as my boots squished in the mud. I had to get to the ponies — they were the ones who could calm and comfort me. I couldn’t think straight, I was thinking of someone else, who would never be here to comfort me again. Someone who won’t be here on earth when I get married someday, or graduate, or go to my first horse show, or get my best time in a swim meet. I was thinking about my Mom. She died three years earlier, and even though I know someday I will see her in heaven , it’s still extremely painful.

As I set down the grass hay, I realized something — they were ignoring the food. Roxy came closer to me, and so did Lady. Roxy put her head over my shoulder and Lady nuzzled my face, which was sticky with tears. They surrounded me and I never wanted to go. I felt their soft breathing on my shoulder, and breathed in their horsey smell. Everything was okay, they cared, and they were never going to say something to hurt my feelings, or tell anyone I was weird, or start rumors. They simply loved me unconditionally.

That’s what I love about horses. They are therapeutic, they have the ability to heal.

When I am sad, their love and attention cheers me up. When I am stressed, the rhythmic feeling of cantering on a horse, or just the fact that one thing in my life is being controlled by me, calms me down. Horses are my healing remedy.
