There’s More to Learn Than Riding

Hard Work

Horses. We all love them, and most of us ride them. Even if we don’t, we dream about it. There’s more to horses than just riding them though. If you’re a horse owner, or if you take lessons, you should know this.

Some of the things you have to do to be a horse owner aren’t very fun. You have to muck out their stall, and that is not the most thrilling thing in the world…to say the least! It is necessary though. Otherwise, your horse will eventually be knee deep in his own droppings, and that is NOT GOOD! It also makes it harder to groom him.

You also have to consider the cost. You have to buy all the supplies you need to groom him, and muck out his stall. The vet bills can be expensive too. Horses are a big responsibility. That’s not to say they aren’t a joy, but it’s not all ribbons and trail rides. You have to work hard to get there, and not just in the ring or arena either!

I’m not trying to make horses sound annoying or hard to take care of. I just am trying to say that your horse is working hard for you. You have to help him out a little too. If he was in the wild, he wouldn’t need you. But he is dependent on you because you put him in a stall where he has to leave his waste and can’t get to food on his own. Do him a favor and take good care of him. After all, you love horses, and don’t want to hurt them!

  2. Glad you like it Jeanna! I totally agree that horses are worth it…that’s why they’re my fav animal!

  3. Lovely blog Horsecrazzz. Many people think that a horse is very beautiful and spirited and buy one but not know their costs and basic needs. But for me, I would be happy to shovel manure if it means getting a horse :D

  4. I loved it!

  5. Madelaina and tash: I know! People should seriously learn about horses before buying one. Glad you both liked it!

  6. yep! it’s much more time and effort trying to rescue a nearly dead horse then it is going to a few riding lessons BEFORE buying a horse as they won’t only teach you to ride but they will teach you how to properly care for the horse!

  7. i’m glad people can see the importance in horse welfare, although some other people can’t.
iv always been taught that if you wont something in life its not just dished out to you on a silver plater there is a lot of work to be done, and especially with horses for example you must consistently exercise, groom, worm, shovel poo, feed them with the diet they need (not your budget coz cardboard just doesn’t cut it, yes some people feed there horses cardboard), they should live on at least 1.5 acreage per horse (no back yards) or a stable with a day yard and somewhere to stretch his legs and gallope around.
if you thinking of geting a horse you should also look at the money side of things too, you to be able to aford agistment, feed, tack, rug, and riding gear.
other than that horse welfare could also be looked at by their behaviour with people and other horses. example if a horse tryed to attack you that could suggest harrasment.
    tammy :) :) :)

  8. You are soooo right! It may be a HUGE responsibility, but in the end, it’s all worth it!

Every single day I try to persuade my parents to buy me a horse, and I never give up. And you know what? My mom has already been persuaded into buying me horse next year. My dad? Well, he kindaa tags along with my mom…..
