Unwanted Horses

“Everybody loves horses,” most people agree. But what about horses that nobody wants anymore? Everyone reading this blog probably has a deep love for horses, but what about girls who think a horse is just a plaything? When the girls are done with their “toy”Â, the horse is gotten rid of, like an old Barbie doll.
The best way to stop the issue of unwanted horses is prevention. Make sure you really want a horse and can take care of one before you buy. Try to buy or adopt horses from rescues. Rather than breeding your mare, maybe you should adopt an unwanted foal. If you have an unwanted horse, privately advertise. Talk to your farrier about people who might like another horse. If all else fails, ask your vet to euthanize the horse. This a humane way take care of a horse that would have no home. Whatever you do, do NOT take the horse to a sale or auction. Many of the horses sold will go to the slaughterhouse, where they will be killed in a horrible way.
This issue is important to me because my family is unable to adopt or support a horse. I want others to know about the opportunities they have to help save a horse.

Editor’s Note: We received two very similar blog submissions on the same day and decided to publish both. The information is summarized from UnwantedHorses.org, a site created by the people at Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary. Stargazer and Allison, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Wow I hate people who think horses are toys!!!!But i have to say that having your horse euthanized is the very most LAST resort.!!!!!!
Writing a blog to alert other horse girls about adopting horses when you can’t is an excellent method to get your word out. You did a brilliant job and I hope to hear more from you! :D
Another great blog on saving horses for slaughter! A great topic for your first blog Allison! It really moved me and made me REALLY think for the first time of all the possible ways I could help unwanted horses!
