When Wild Horses Roamed Free

There was a time when you could go almost anywhere in North America and you would find wild horses. Since then, a lot has changed. There are very few left and their numbers are not increasing by much. Thankfully, there is one organization that is working to change that.

RETURN TO FREEDOM
Return to Freedom is a wild horse sanctuary where wild horses have the freedom to roam just as their ancestors would have. The people at Return to Freedom run many programs in an effort to educate the public about the danger that theses horses are in.
SPIRIT
Not the horse from the Dreamworks movie Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron. This is the real deal — he’s horse who inspired the movie. Spirit is a big part of Return to Freedom. School groups often come to Return to Freedom just to see Spirit. Although he was not born wild, he is being introduced to several mares.

I wish we could go back in time to see all the wild horses in their hay day before they were all gone. It would be cool to see them all running and manes streaming through a canyon or a grassy plain. If only times hadn’t changed.
