You Know You’re a Horse Girl When…

by Syd, age 12

At age 1 - All the other babies wanted a blanket with rainbows and flowers. You wanted one with horses.

At age 2 - All the other little girls smiled when they got to play with mommy’s phone. You just wanted to pet mommy’s horse.

horse-girl-01.gifAt age 3 - All the other toddler girls wanted a doll for Christmas. You wanted a toy horse.

At age 4 - All the other little girls wanted to ride a tricycle. You wanted to do pony rides.

At age 5 - Every other girl was begging for a puppy or a kitten. All you wanted was a horse.

At age 6 - Every other girl wanted their parents to sign them up for soccer or volleyball. You wanted riding lessons.

At age 7 - Every other girl would cry when a boy was mean to them or if they got their new shoes dirty. You only cried when something was wrong with a horse.

At age 8 - All your other girlfriends were experimenting with braids or pony tails for hairstyles. You just wanted hay in yours (OK, maybe a ponytail but only because it had the word ‘pony’ in it).

horse-girl-02.gifAt age 9 - All your other friends finally got a puppy of their own. You just got your first pony.

At age 10 - Girls your age are sad if they don’t get a lead in a school play. You’re only depressed when you can’t join some of your riding friends in a new jumping level.

At age 11 - Every other girl may be going to her first school dance (with or without a date). You’re headed to your first horse show.

At age 12 - Every other girl is depressed when they don’t get the pair of pants they’ve really been wanting for Christmas. You’re depressed when you don’t get that new pair of breeches or the show coat you’ve had your eye on.

At age 13 - All your friends have their first boyfriend. You just say, “Who needs that? I’ve got my new jumper gelding!”

horse-girl-03.gifAt age 14 - All the other teenage girls spend their weekends on dates or at the mall shopping with friends. You spend it at shows or riding with friends.

At age 15 - All the girls your age are psyched for getting their permit. All you’re excited about is qualifying for A-circuit shows.

At age 16 - Every other girl is begging for a car. You’re begging for that Warmblood you spotted for sale at the last show that you know would be an eye-catcher in the hunter ring.

At age 17 - Every other girl your age can’t wait to go to college in a few years to get away from parents. You’re just sad you might not be able to bring all your horses.

horse-girl-04.gifAt age 18 - All the other girls are considering a career in fashion or medicine. You just want to be a trainer or a breeder or something to do with HORSES!!!!!

So to be a horse-loving girl you have to be a little different. You can’t be like all the “normal” girls your age. You want different things and do different stuff in your spare time. Don’t worry if some other girls think you’re weird for loving horses, and don’t worry if they dis on you or think horses are gross. They will never be able to understand the bond between girls and horses, and (unfortunately for them) will never be able to experience it.
