Dreaming of Lone Star | Chapter 4

by Katrina Halem Al-Abar, age 16

Angel came out of the man's rather smelly house with a piece of rope, which she tied around the man. She slung him over Gypsy's back, then climbed on herself. Lone Star and Kuzuma stood quietly, waiting to go. They followed Gypsy out of the field to the woods, then down the trail of hoofprints that would lead them home.

And then it started to rain. The rain just drizzled, then it pounded, washing away the trail of hoofprints. Angel kept Gypsy walking forward, then the trail branched. She took the left trail. Then the trail branched again. Angel took the right trail this time and soon found herself in a completely unfamiliar part of the woods.

Angel even passed the fallen log eight times. She went back the way she came, wandered for a while, then passed the fallen log again. She couldn't even find the other trail. Angel looked left and right, then buried her head in Gypsy's mane.

She was lost.

Angel knew she was lost. She knew that there was no way of getting home. But then, Lone Star stepped forward and sniffed the air. He whickered and set off at a trot in one direction. Kuzuma followed him.

"Lone Star," Angel cried, "Come back!"

But Lone Star didn't listen. So Angel followed him too. They trotted down the trail and then Lone Star veered off to the left into the woods. He picked his way through the trees and Angel followed. After about half an hour, they burst through the trees and Angel saw her house. At that moment, the man awoke, rolled off of Gypsy, and managed to wriggle out of his ropes.

"You wretch!" he cried, "My horses-"

"MY horses, you mean," said Angel. She turned Gypsy and cantered off after Lone Star and Kuzuma, who had fled when seeing that the man was awake. The man chased after her and Angel saw him gaining.

"Faster, girl!" cried Angel, leaning low over Gypsy's neck.

Gypsy kicked into a gallop and headed straight for the barn, where Laona and the police were waiting.

"ANGEL!!!!!" screamed Laona, running toward her. Angel pulled Gypsy to a halt and slid shakily off her back into Laona's arms.

The man came barrelling around the corner just then and was caught by the police and charged for stealing. He shot Angel a nasty look as he was dragged away.

As soon as the horses where groomed and comfortable, Angel sat in the barn office and told everyone what happened.

"You're a real hero Angel," said Micky, smiling at her.

"No," whispered Angel, "Dreaming of Lone Star is a hero."
