A little while after Lone Star was born, Lone Lady got rather ill. Laona called the vet and Dr. Corso determined the illnes as mercury poisoning. He said that until Lone Lady was better, she couldn't feed Lone Star because she might pass on the mercury poison. So it was Angel's job to bottle-feed Lone Star. After about two weeks, Lone Lady was completely cured and able to feed Lone Star. Lone Star grew tall and handsome.

When Lone Star was eight months old and weaned from Lone Lady, he was usually turned out in his paddock with another foal, Kuzuma. Kuzuma was a short black filly with a temper that no one could control. Angel and Laona's parents would usually have taken care of Kuzuma, but they had died in a fire ten years ago. Angel was four at the time and hardly remembered her parents at all. But Laona had been ten years old, so the accident had hit her rather hard.

Lone star turned out to be perfect for Kuzuma. He was bold, reckless, and quick-witted. Angel loved the little colt, but she still had those disturbing nightmares about him.

When Lone Star was one year old, Angel decided to try lunging him for the first time. But when she reached his paddock, Lone Star was gone.
