Angel searched frantically around the paddock, now aware that Kuzuma was gone too. Then she stopped dead. The fence had been sawed cleanly through, leaving a hole big enough for two yearlings to slip out of.

Angel ran toward the house where Laona was doing paper work. When Angel came crashing through the door, Laona nearly jumped out of her skin. Angel quickly related what had happened and Laona's face paled. "I'll call the cops," she said, "You look for clues." Angel nodded and headed out the door again.

Angel prowled around the paddock and found some hoofprints. Small ones, obviously from Kuzuma and Lone Star, and bigger ones from horses that had shoes and were probably around fifteen hands high. Luckily it had rained last night, so Angel could easily track the hoofprints, and the prints where fresh. Angel ran to the stable, pulled her horse Gypsy out of her stall, told Micky, the head groom what had happened and where she was going, bridled Gypsy, and galloped off in pursuit of the thieves.
