Bonding: We Are One
Published by GHC • Dec 8th, 2007 • Category: Gift Horse, by Jeanna Briggsby Jeanna Briggs, age 13
So let’s say you fell in love with horses at a young age, and you beg your parents for years (OK, so maybe not that long) to get you one. Every time you ask they say, “We don’t have the money or enough room” or something like that. Well, your birthday is coming up and when it gets near you start asking your parents what you are going to do about a party. They say you aren’t having one this year. You are disappointed and ask why. They say you’ll see later.
So finally your birthday gets here and your parents give you this giant box. You tear the paper off and open the box. Inside is a saddle, a bridle and a helmet. You stare slack-jawed at the tack. This could only mean one thing…
So they pile the whole family into the car and set off. It doesn’t take very long, but to you it seems like hours. When you get out of the car you are at an equestrian center and standing there, a bow around its neck, is a horse. Your horse. You walk over and hug it lovingly. It nuzzles you, then starts to sample your hair. You know that a bond is being made, one that won’t be broken.

As you keep growing, so does your horse. In a few years you are the best team at the stable. The reason? You and your horse love each other. You are closer to that pony than you will ever be to any dumb boy. You horse is your best friend. You can’t take it to the mall and you can’t have a movie night with it, but none of that matters to you. You have each other and when you climb on his back — whether on an English saddle, a western saddle, or even bareback — you become one and nothing can stop you from being the best you can be.
If you have your own horse, or even if you lease one, you know what I mean. Everyone who doesn’t, well, hopefully someday you will share this special bond with a horse, and then you’ll know the feeling!
