Don’t Judge A Horse By Its Colour | by Madelaina, age 11

A white head dipped down,
And upon a boy’s head it snorted.
Ragged and ungraceful it might’ve seemed,
But that didn’t mean a good friend it forfeited.

As the pink muzzle touched the dark hair of the boy,
He looked up and met a warmth which tinkled,
A breath which clouded around his face,
A breath which showed not of love wrinkled.

A rough hand was held out,
Owned by the kind boy.
It rubbed the horse awkwardly,
Though rough, the horse nickered with joy.

The horse closed its eyes,
Wondering about its past,
When no pat was given, but given was food.
But when given for the horse, always, always last.

Its pinkish eye lids closed,
Its eyes underneath turned misty.
It wished for all the past seven years,
To have been as nice as now, when people weren’t so picky.

Royals mounted tall, dark blacks,
And knights on proud greys.
Even peasants disliked the appearances of cremellos,
And stubbornly rode on bays.

What is wrong with cremellos?
Aren’t they just wonderful?
But people fancy greys,
And think they are more beautiful.

Cremellos are fantastic,
It’s that I care.
You think they are lousy and ugly?
You’re not being fair.

A sweet personality they have,
Take a cremello for granted? You shan’t,
Oh why do you dislike them so much?
Because ugly they aren’t.

Is it the eyes?
Is it the colour?
Is it the drowsy look in them?
Is that all the things to note in a horse you look for?

Don’t judge a horse by its colour,
It’s personality that matters,
Check out a cremello on the sales page,
Before buying a grey with which you are most flattered.

They might look weird compared to greys,
But they are still horses, horses loved by you and I,
If you dislike cremellos, perlinos or albinos,
Please think about it, don’t lie.

Think about those horses, apart from the basic colours,
Included are cremellos,
They might not look like geniuses,
But they are very good fellows.

  8. Madelaina, My poetry is not near as good as yours. Now I am really flattered that you like my poem. I totally agree though. My friend used to always ask, “What is your favorite color of horse.” I always answered, “I love all horses no matter what color they are” I’m not saying it’s bad to like a certain color of horse, but why limit you favorites to one color when you could have ten, twenty, or even 30 favorite colors of horses. And there are so many. You might not even know all the colors yet. Good job writing the blog. You rock Madelaina!
