We Love Them Until Their Last Breath and Beyond

fella.gifI know many of us have had to go through the horror of losing our best friend, our horse. Maybe they were old and had to be put to sleep. Or maybe you had to move and the living creature that knew all your secrets had to be left behind.

I have had to go through this. Last year when I was in fourth grade, my horse, Fella, was in too much pain to live happily anymore. We had to have him put to sleep. I loved him when he took that last breath, and I love him to this day even though he is no longer here with me physically. But I still belive he is with me.

There are some things I did to make it okay, but it is truly impossible to forget. In the Loft Book Club there is a poem dedicated to Fella. After I wrote it I wondered — was that a goodbye? Sometimes you have to let go of the horror and just remember the fun times you had, like the memories of whispering your secrets into their fuzzy ear.

Fella is my best friend to this day. Even though I can’t whisper my secrets into his ear, I still whisper them to him at night. And do you know what? I know he still hears me!

So if you have had to go through this, or if you ever do, don’t be afraid to let go of the sad thing. Remember the good. You still love them, so they must still love you.

Editor’s Note: We received another blog submission on this subject just before posting this. Obviously it’s a subject that’s relevant to our readers. As long as we have horses and other animals in our lives (not to mention our human loved ones), most of us will have to deal with loss at some point. So look for another blog about this subject with more tips about how to deal with a loss and the time leading up to it.

Thanks for the great blog Rebecca!

  18. Wow, I’m truly sorry about Fella. I had a similar experience once. One of my Pappaw’s horses(a palomino pinto) had a baby, and she could’nt nurse it, so it ended up dying.Recently she had another one that looks just like her! Their markings are even almost identical! It’s a colt. Another one of them, a chestnut, had a brown pinto filly too. They live half in my backyard and half at my Pappaw’s barn. There’s an electrical fence keepin them in.Too bad my pappaw’s selling all his horses soon.

  19. Sorry!I can’t comment on a blog without making it a story!Do you guys have any more stories open for submissions currently?

  20. Ali, I am sorry that you had to go through that. It really is horrible, but at least you have other horses (right now) to love. I have not owned a horse since Fella died. :(( :-S :-/

  21. 8-} :-h 8-} :-? {:D} :-O :-S :(( :)) O:-) B-) :-/ ;;) :D ;) :( :) I don’t know how I feel about Fella being gone!

  22. Sorry about Fella he sounded like a great horse. I have several horses. None of mine have passed on yet. All of them except three have been around since I was born, and my horse is very special. He has always looked after me, and I don’t know what I am going to do when he’s gone. Luckily he’s still got a lot years ahead of him. Great story!!

  23. Thank BarrelRacer,
I hope that you never have to go through that, but you probably will, just remember, let go of the bad, remember the good
